Five things we learned after the first 49ers preseason game
http://www.examiner.com/article/five-things-we-learned-after-the-first-49ers-preseason-game
| Quote: | The running game will be mixed with several types of offenses.
The 49ers were able to run the ball for 260 yards against the team. Plays were coming from sweeps or going up the gut.
The pass rushing is effective.
Ponder, Webb and Bethel-Thompson were all under pressure for several parts of the game.
The backup QB position battle is still up for grabs.
Even though Kaepernick had a huge run, his arm was not as impressive. There were times he didn't hit his target or make a good decision when throwing to receivers.
Brandon Jacobs will be used for short yardage situations.
It was clearly shown that Jacobs would be on the field when there was a 3rd down with under five yards needed. He was put on the field for every third and short.
Bruce Miller will be the key to the 49ers offensive success on the ground.
The ground plays for running backs wouldn't be possible without Bruce Miller. He emerged last season for being effective at blocking. This could be the year where he has an excellent season in creating holes for RBs. |

I might have underestimated the Brandon Jacobs signing. He could be a huge addition for third down short yardage situations. _________________

Let's keep in mind that we were getting great push up the middle... just saying. That run he had in the RZ was impressive, though. He side-stepped that linebacker and got some good yardage.
Sorry, it's just hard for me to like this guy after hating him for the past few years. _________________

I'll give credit to him when it's due, but I still think he's a horrible person and will never like him. _________________

We struggled converting on 3rd down last year, and if he runs north->south like he did in that game, we will be a very good team on 3rd and short. |

Agreed. Granted, it was preseason and he has something to prove right now, but if it was any indication of how he may run for us going forward, defenses are going to hate him more than many of us have in the past. _________________

With our other three guys, I am pretty sure him an Dix will be gone. Just my opinion. _________________

Jacobs will stay. Dixon and Cartright will be packing their bags. |

Jacobs will make it, and maybe even Cartwright. He impressed me last weekend with quickness. _________________

Can't see that happening. Every knows about our bad redzone, and 3rd down offense. But it wasn't just the passing. Our short running game was not good last year either. I believe we brought him in specifically to address that need. Last year we carried 2 FBs and 3 RBs. No reason we can't carry 1 FB and 4 RBs this year, especially when one of them could fill in at FB if necessary. Not to mention we've been practicing some other guys at the spot too. _________________

So who will be the guys that make FB and RB? Someone has to be the odd man out. _________________

I think Dobbs will be the 3rd TE with Reuland on the PS, which saves a spot. _________________
