My ipod touch broke a few months ago, so I've been using my olympus sound recorder as an mp3 player. When I first listened to the album, I was driving to school about an hour away. The way my recorder is, when a track is done, I have to press skip to get to the next track. I think if the skits were separate from the songs they are intended to be tied to, my original experience with the album could have been slightly different, a tad more disconnected. Hell, I might have skipped the skit to get to more music. (I went into the album blind, so I didn't know the skits were important to the music).
I'm glad Kendrick tied certain songs together. And certain skits to certain songs. It's more fun to dissect that way. More fun to interpret "why is dying of thirst right after sing about me on the same track?", especially on a first listen all the way through.
It's 2012 man. Rappers are trying to be more creative and fresh. I get that on multiple listens, you may have favorite songs, and want to put them on playlist and whatnot. But it's such a minor complaint, because if you are tech savvy enough to be making playlist and whatnot, then you can take a few minutes to separate the tracks from the skits.
My fav album is Train of Thought. My fav song on the album is Four Women. It's a hidden track at the end of the album that takes about 2 minutes to get to. I could separate the song from the 2 minutes of instrumental and then silence that follows, but there is a sort of charm to it. Reminds me of the first time I discovered the hidden track. |
Four Women is one of my all-time favorites too. That song puts me in such a unique mood every time I hear it. _________________ Top 50 Franchise Cornerstones (2012) - COMPLETED! |

This album says otherwise:
Nobody does interludes like Prince Paul. This album is chock full of interludes that interlace the concept and the accompanying songs in a more impressive manner than GKMC. And these interludes are separate tracks.
Claiming the very first listen as grounds for your argument doesn't work bcuz who is going to skip those interludes (as separate tracks) on that first listen? Maybe for an artist you don't really care for, but if it's an album you're truly excited for you'll listen to them. Attaching them to the songs doesn't mystically tie anything into the concept.
Of course we're tech savvy enough to edit the tracks but why is that onus on us when it's unnecessary in the first place? I completely understand where you're coming from and it's 100% his prerogative. I just think it's a pain. I do appreciate him making a conceptual album as it's virtually an extinct art form in hip hop. I loved Deltron 3030. I spent 11 months making a conceptual hip hop soundtrack to Jason Pearson's Body Bags. I made my interludes separate tracks tho.
