Keshawn Martin

It seems like I have been waiting for a long time to see what Trindon Holliday can do as a full time return man for this team and maybe this year we will all get to see him in that role with Jacoby gone. Holliday signed a four year deal worth $1.886 million as a part of the 2010 draft class and has only played in one regular season game in his career. If he does make it through training camp and onto the roster for preseason, I'm sure he will get some shots to return kicks. Although if this kickoff rule from last year is the same this year, the value of a kickoff specialist is drastically reduced. And if he doesn't prove himself in the preseason he could be off the team by the time week 1 rolls around.

Keshawn Martin on the other hand looks like he could be the real spark plug that this offense has been looking for. His quickness and ability to get separation combined with his return ability makes him look like a much more valuable football player than Holliday has been thus far. Of course when it comes to straight line speed there are only a couple of athletes in the world that can keep up with Holliday. But this is football. Not a track meet.

I think Martin is intelligent enough to learn the offense and his football IQ is high enough, being a former QB, that he will be able to fill the role of slot receiver for this team better than anyone we have ever had. The slot guy often has to have a feel for zone coverages and when to just "sit down" in an open part of the defense for his QB.

David Anderson was a solid player who had some great chemistry with Matt Schaub but he just wasn't able to stick around here for very long. I really hope that Martin can be the long term solution for us at the slot and if it turns out that he will be our return man instead of Holliday then his impact on the team could be even bigger. I think he might be my second favorite player from this draft class. Obviously I liked the Mercilus pick the most and my second favorite player is between Crick, like many people, and Martin. I just like Martin's explosion and ability to create offense in a variety of ways (scored a touchdown in four or five different ways in college).

Keshawn Martin is definitely the most intriguing Texan I am looking forward to this season. Like you said, he can score in a variety of ways, and does a really good job of separating himself from defenders. I expect Kubiak to use him in trick plays on offense. I hope he ends up being our kickoff (Manning doesn't need to kickoff because he is valuable to us on defense) in addition to punt returns.
