It's almost that time! In less than 10 days, the players will report to Wofford College to officially begin the road to the regular season. This will be the second training camp in the Ron Rivera and Cam Newton era and will hopefully see our schemes implemented better than they were the year prior due to the lockout. KEY POSITION BATTLES/QUESTIONS HEADING INTO TRAINING CAMP

1 - How will the Panthers linebackers perform (and lineup)?

After two critical injuries to All-Pro linebacker Jon Beason and All-Pro caliber linebacker Thomas Davis within the first two weeks of the season, Carolina invested their first round selection into drafting All-American linebacker and the winner of the Lombardi and Butkus trophies, Luke Kuechly. At OTAs and mini-camp, Kuechly was asked to learn all three linebacker spots and it remains to be seen if 59 will stick on the outside or gradually take over the middle of the defense and push Beason to the outside. Thomas Davis was re-signed on a much cheaper contract and is attempting to become the first player to return from three ACL tears on the same knee after being evaluated by Dr. James Andrews. It will be interesting to see how much competition, if any, he provides to consistent linebacker James Anderson, who in 2011 recorded 1.5 sacks, 2 interceptions, 9 passes deflected, 145 tackles, and 8 stuffs, the latter two stats being among the highest for the linebacker position.

2 - Will Jeff Otah be able to fend off Byron Bell?

At 6'6 and 330lbs, Jeff Otah is a titan of a man but has only started 29 games in 4 years for Carolina due to knee injuries, the Kryptonite for any man of his size. Now entering the final year of his rookie contract, Otah not only has the challenge of proving he is healthy enough to warrant a second contract but will need to show he can beat out Byron Bell for the starting right tackle spot. Bell started 12 games on the right side in 2011 and the undrafted free agent went through major growing pains throughout the season. Otah, when healthy, is arguably the best right tackle in the game but will need to prove that in training camp to keep his job.

3 - Will Greg Hardy take the next step?

Nicknamed "Kraken, " Greg Hardy has all the talent in the world to be a Pro Bowl defensive end at 6'4, 281lbs running a 4.79 and some long arms. While he did pressure the quarterback a good amount earlier in the season and deflected 11 passes (leading all defensive lineman), Hardy appeared to have worn down as the season wore on while Applewhite and Keiser only heated up. Despite the pickup of Frank Alexander through the draft, Carolina seems to have made it clear they are putting their faith into Hardy and it will be up to him to make sure they aren't let down. If he doesn't, he could see himself being rotated in and out of the lineup more often than he'd like.

4 - Will the real Captain Munnerlyn please sit down?

In the above picture, Captain Munnerlyn is committing a penalty, a sight Carolina saw all too much in 2011. While Chris Gamble ranked as one of the top cornerbacks in the league according to Pro Football Focus in completion percentage when targeting him (coming in at #4), Captain Munnerlyn ranked a shocking (or not so shocking) 66 out of 66. Even worse? While quarterbacks had a 53.3 QBR when targeting Gamble, 3rd best in the league, teams had a 126.9 quarterback rating when targeting Munnerlyn, second only to Quentin Jammer. Going into training camp, the #2 cornerback position will be up for grabs as Munnerlyn is challenged by Butler, Hogan, and hungry rookie Norman who many praised for what he did in OTAs and mini-camp.

5 - Will Ron Edwards be enough to shore the middle of the defense up?

After an injury cut the now 33 year old season's short, Ron Edwards will return and likely in the starting lineup. After years of shuffling around with the defensive tackle position since the loss of Kris Jenkins, Damione Lewis is the only player at that position to start more than one full season for them since '08. Terrell McClain will look to become the second player. Coming out of college, he was considered a quicker, more agile player rather than a run stuffer and it showed in his rookie year as at times, he was overwhelmed by the NFL lineman. The depth at the position is below average and while Neblett and Kearse are decent, Edwards and McClain will be relied on to help shore up the middle of the defense to allow the stellar linebackers of Carolina to do their job.

6 - Will Gettis and LaFell prove Carolina right in not acquiring a wide receiver in the early rounds of the draft or through free agent?

With a catch rate of 64.3% and averaging 17 YPC, Brandon LaFell turned it around in 2011 and became one of the many bright spots on the 5th ranked Carolina offense. With an excellent catch radius, LaFell has even caught the eye of Adam Schefter who predicts that the 25 year old is poised to breakout this season. Gettis wasn't as fortunate for his sophomore season as he went down with an injury but the once raw receiver showed he capable he is during his rookie season and put up very solid numbers considering who was throwing to him throughout the season. With the more "possessive" receiver in LaFell and the deep threat in Gettis, it'll be interesting to see if they are good enough to help transition Smith in the slot more and to make the coaching staff correct in their move to not bring in any other big time receiver, whether it be through the draft or free agency.

Other position battles/questions -

Justin Medlock vs. Olindo Mare for the spot at kicker
Nick Harris vs. Brad Nortman for the spot at punter
Who will step up at the strong safety position between Nakamura, Smith, and Martin?
Will Cam Newton be able to avoid the sophomore slump as Derek Anderson and Jimmy Clausen challenge him for the starting job?

Good write-up.

The one I am most intrigued by is the #2 CB position. If we can get even respectable play out of that position, we could be an average to above average defense, which is all we need with such a powerful offense.

As weird as it sounds, I am also intrigued to see how Brad Nortman does at punter. If he really is as good at directional punting and pinning opponents into a corner as reports are saying, then I hope he succeeds. We really need a punter like that.

And finally, let me see Joe Adams with the football in his hands. This kid could totally change our special teams.

The #2 CB posistion is the make or break on this team this year. If we do not find that #2 guy, it's a 1st round pick for us next year.

I think Norman comes into camp impressing the coaching staff and locks up the #2 cb slot, munnerlyn at the nickel with a solid backup in hogan. Luke, Beaston, and Anderson starting at LB, and Im gonna go with Big Money Charles and Alexander starting at DE, with Hardy splitting time. Edwards and Fua at DT with McClain roatatiing, I think Neblett is cut, character flaws and low productivity, probably seek another low cost veteran to fill the void. As far as safety is concerned I really think Nakamura is gonna make a strong push for a starting slot, if not winning it, after all the guy is punisher who wants it, and plays hard every down. Pair him with Godfrey, Gamble, and Norman. Thats a pretty decent defensive backfield. Overall this is the 2nd yr in McDermotts system, alot of solid players back with quality new draft class, the defense is obviously the focus for true panthers fans. As we all know CAM is coming this yr to bring the pain on all that oppose him! MVP!

Thatís when the teamís rookies are reporting for three days of work before camp starts up in full. Acording to Joseph Person of the Charlotte Observer, the idea is to let Newton develop some chemistry with the teamís rookie receivers. The Panthers took Joe Adams in the fourth round of Aprilís draft and there are seven other rookie receivers trying to earn a spot on the team this summer, which should give Newton a chance to keep busy in the days leading up to the formal start of training camp.

Cam Possible going to work sooner rather than later.

It sounds to me, like the Panthers may feel Joe Adams or Jared Green, could be vital parts, if Newton is going to training camp to get reps with rookies (despite last years lockout)? Laughing

And I'm sure Newton will throw some occasional bombs to Adams, and maybe even some to Green (who many professional Panthers followers, seem to think will make the team) in Chud's vertical offense.

If all things go well for the Panthers in 2012, they will more resembles the Saints than anything else. This means, they could have 4,000+ yards passing, with 2000 yards rushing again (as last year).

Most Panther fans seem to either feel, the team will throw more or run less in 2012? Shoot, I think if Chud gets his way, it will be both/similar to last year (with possibly more passing yards)! Lol.

Personally, I think you can do both, as the Panthers and Saints had already shown last year.

3-day mini-camp for the rookies, players injured (Beason, Johnson, Davis, Edwards, etc.), and quarterbacks ended today. Players will arrive at Wofford College on Friday and official training camp will begin the following day on Saturday.

Thomas Davis interview - http://www.panthers.com/media-vault/videos/Panthers-Insider/910b22f1-9607-4d78-9eef-26e4aa38b002

Whether he starts or not is irrelevant. Thomas Davis represents what Richardson, Hurney, and Rivera want in a player. Someone who refuses to give up until they accomplish their goal and that goal for Davis is being able to return and be a contributor in some fashion for this team. Got to love him and he is that kind of player that will have his number stored away for a long time until a player comes along that deserves it.

Davis would be a perfect situational guy to give both Kuechly and Anderson a play off, and to spy a playmaker or rush the passer.
