Minnesota Vikings defensive end Everson Griffen has been excused from the team indefinitely following the sudden death of his mother.
Griffen missed practice Thursday, one day after police arrived at the team's headquarters to deliver the news to him, Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said. No details of Griffen's mother's death were immediately available. Griffen's mother was in town visiting her son. Frazier and several Vikings players went to Griffen's house Wednesday night to comfort him.
Frazier: "As you can imagine, it was tough news. There was nothing that could have prepared him for that news. I'm not sure what his status will be going forward. Our prayers as an organization, as teammates are with he and his family. This is a difficult time for him, as you can imagine. We'll be there to support him as best we can. It's hard. He loved his mom, like we all do. And to have no clue that something like this was on the horizon. It's tough. It's still tough, obviously."
"There is no timetable. I explained to him yesterday he needs to go through the grieving process properly and don't be thinking about no football. Just doing whatever he needs to do away from football. His mom was very, very close to him. This is going to be a tough deal for him."

Quit a different (and better) response than Childress' fining Troy Williamson for missing a week of practice to attend his grandmother's funeral. _________________ To view links or images in signatures your post count must be 10 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. |

^ most of us here, as i remember, supported Childress' handling of Williamson, who, unlike Griffen, did not have permission to be awol from the team.
good to see you around here again, Darth. _________________

| Glad to hear that Griffen has returned to the team, his presence is obviously huge for the Vikes. |

| Griffen is another player to keep an eye on this offseason in terms of contract negotiations. 4 years/$16M? He deserves what Robison got in 2011. |

I would do it, in reality he is starting calibre RDE, and hopefully will take over at starters in the near future. The fact that he is verstaille to play other potential position is valuable in packages. _________________

Fast foward one year, isnt the Everson Griffen-Brian Robison situation eerily similar to the Ray Edwards-Brian Robison decision two years?
In 2011, the Vikes had the choice of keeping the solid and steady Edwards or going with the backup with more upside in Robison.
Robison has been solid and steady, but Griffen seems to have more potential. If history is any indicator with this team, I could see them going with Griffen just like they chose Robison. |

Thats awful. I'll keep his family in my prayers.
and yes, Griffen does deserve to be extended. He's a nice piece to the puzzle at Defensive End. Hopefully someday he becomes a full time starter. _________________

It might be more similar to Adrian Peterson-Chester Taylor than Edwards-Robison, considering Griffen potentially could just surpass Robison. _________________

Wasnt that the same line of thinking though with Edwards and Robison. Many felt that Robison could surpass Edwards too, as a starter. I dont see Robison losing his starting job this year because Griffen has played well as a reserve. 2013 could be a different story though, i will give you that. |

Very sorry to hear about the passing of Everson's mother. Respect that he still wants to play sunday, I'm sure his teammates appreciate that. _________________

Very tough for Griffen to play on, but its nice that he has a vet like Winfield to lean on who just went through a similar tragic event in his life. |

Slightly similar situation.
My grandfather passed away my senior year of football, and the first thing I wanted to do was get back to my teammates and have at least some sense of normalcy.
I totally understand his decision to come back and he, as well as the rest of his family, are in my prayers. _________________
