So, I guess with it being the dull period of the off-season Prisco ranked his overrated/underrated players for each of the 32 teams in the NFL. For the Cowboys, here's his list:

Quote:
Overrated: NT Jay Ratliff. He just wasn't as good as in years past. He's solid, but he wasn't dominant like he was in other seasons.

Underrated: LT Tyron Smith. He was outstanding as a rookie on the right side and will be even better on the left, his more his natural position.

Link

Personally, I agree.

How is Smith underrated?

If I'm going with underrated then I'm going with Romo because people still call him garbage yet he has become more and more efficient. He is becoming the QB many of us want him to be.

As far as overrated I will go with Dez. Hasn't done anything to overly impress me. He has flashes but people act like he is going be a top 5 WR and he hasn't done anything to prove it yet.

Under: Sean Lee. Seriously not getting the talk he should in mainstream football circuits in my opinion. He might be the second best player on the defense and in the top 5 on the team.

Over: Jay Ratliff. A combo of injuries and playing out of position has caused this. Hopefully he has the talent left to bounce back...

overrated and underrated by who?

Based on perception from NFL Fans:

Underrated: Romo (meaning he is better than what NFL fans think)
Overrated: Tyron Smith (meaning he isn't as good as some think... aka, someone ranked him the second best left tackle yet he has never played LT!)

Based on perception from all Cowboy Fans:

Underrated: Romo
Overrated: Demarcus Ware, Demarco Murray

Based on perception from more knowledgeable Cowboy Fans:

Underrated: Miles Austin
Overrated: Not Sure

What?! HOW can you claim that Smith is OVERrated? Ware and Murray overrated too?! No way! Austin underrated? Don't think so either. Most of us 'more knowledgeable fans' give him plenty of credit. His only knock really is the small, nagging injuries. I think Romo being underrated is the only thing I could possibly agree with - at least without further reasoning from you.

Not neccessarily by Cowboy fans, but by the rest of the league, the most underrated Cowboy is Jason Witten. He is the most complete TE in the NFL. There are some TE's who are better receivers and a few who are better blockers, but no other TE combines both abilities as well as Witten.

By Cowboy fans, the most overrated player is DeMarco Murray. We as Cowboy fans need to take a step back and put away the annointing oils for a little bit. Yes, he looked amazing for the 6 or 7 games that he was the feature back. But, we have had RB's before that looked great over a short period of time. I remember when Julius Jones and Marion Barber were thought to be great RB's. Hell, some people probably still think Tashard Choice is a quality RB. Until DeMarco Murray puts together a full season of brilliant games, it remains to be seen whether he is going to be the next great Dallas Cowboy RB or the next Julius Jones/Marion Barber/Tashard Choice/Felix Jones.

I don't think there are many fans who feel that Romo is underrated.

I think what dahobofest is trying to assert is that the common NFL fans knocks Romo as a never-was. A borderline mediocre QB who is the butt of a joke. Teasing him with such flattering nick-names.

And he should be viewed that way (as a never-was) until he can prove that he's something more than a high profile version of Marc Bulger.

I don't think you read it correctly. I broke it down by belief according to group. So according to common belief on Romo by all NFL fans, he is underrated. Meaning that NFL fans believe he is worse than he truly is, therefore underrated.
