The New England Patriots announced the signing of veteran TE Bo Scaife today. In addition, the Patriots released DL Markell Carter, TE Nick Melillo and OL Jon Opperud.

The move is a bit surprising because the Patriots have Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez already on the roster and have signed TE Daniel Fells during free-agency.

Scaife offers little blocking ability and is considered a pass-catching TE only.

But he probably signed a 1-year that kicks most of the money in if he makes the team.

Scaife played 6 season for the Titans and recorded 251 catches for 2,383 yards and 12 TD's in his career.

***Update***
The Patriots have released Scaife... he was reportedly out of shape when he arrived to workouts.

Good news for the Pats, they were looking pretty thin at TE.

I think what happens is that Scaife will work out with the team during training camp and get comfortable with the offense but then will be released in the final cuts. If Gronkowski or Hernandez suffer an injury mid-season he will be signed off the emergency list to play a pass-catching role on the team.

It's better to have him know the offense now then learning it mid-season.

You can tell it's slow when threads like this pop up.

It's an insurance signing. If something happens to Gronk or Hernandez during training camp, he can fill in for a while. If not, he gets cut and he's the Pats short list of players to sign during the season if they need him.

How? Bc I said Scaife is bad? Your right though. Great signing Pats. Gronk and Hernandez better watch out.
