Quote:
The Mariners have signed Luis Liberato, a 17-year-old Dominican outfielder, for $140,000.

Liberato is 6-foot-1, 175 pounds and has flashed a mature approach to hitting from the left side with gap power and advanced baseball instincts for his age. Like many young Dominican amateur hitters, he'll try to sell out for power at times, but when he's at his best he's shown a solid swing. The Mariners believe he can stay in center field, though he has the arm for right field if necessary.

I'm leaning in the fire JackZ direction now. I thought he was smarter than this. Ibanez, Morse, Bay... The only bright side is that he hasn't decimated the farm in these stupid moves like Bavasi did.

Anyways, what does the lineup look like now?...

C Jesus Montero
1B Justin Smoak
2B Kyle Seager
SS Brendan Ryan
3B Kyle Seager
LF Michael Saunders
CF Franklin Gutierrez
RF Michael Morse
DH Kendrys Morales

We definitely need to find a decent stopgap catcher now...

I don't even know what to think. I hate the trade. I don't mind Morse, but Jaso is more valuable to us and was cheap for three more years...

Agreed

If we ended up giving up a reliever, or decent prospect, I wouldn't have minded this move. But we give up a better player, at a more valuable position? wtf...

Definitely seems like a desperation move.

The only way I tolerate it is if this means they think Zunino is ready out of spring training. Seems like a long shot, but that would be amazing.

If Morse puts up somewhere close to 2011 stats, I'll be fine with it, to be honest.

At the very least, we traded a platoon bat for a full time bat, hopefully. I'm slightly worried about this PTBNL and some other prospect, though. It better be no one I know. Laughing

I thought to PTBNL was from the A's?

The other prospect was definitely from the A's.

The Mariners, Nationals and Athletics have combined on a three-team trade that will send Michael Morse to the Mariners, John Jaso to the A's and a three-player package to the Nationals that includes minor league right-handers A.J. Cole, Blake Treinen and a player to be named from the Athletics.

Yeah, nothing to worry about there.

Ahhh ok. I was gonna say. We better not have another damn Jose Campos situation. Laughing

Just Morse for Jaso, not too mad about it then. Jaso had no place once Zunino got here. At least getting Morse we have an every day player, I guess.

If Ackley can rebound from last year and Zunino ( Pray ) is as good as advertised, we may actually have a decent offense. I feel weird saying that as a mariner fan.

And who the hell is in our starting rotation this year? Laughing

Felix
Iwakuma
Ramirez

Funnily enough, I have more faith that Ramirez will be good next year than Hultzen. Laughing

Ramirez is really underrated. I bet he puts up 3+ WAR this year.

The more I think about it, Smoak has to go now. Our 3 potentially best hitters are all best off at DH. To get all 3 into the lineup, we're going to have to put up with sh!t defense at either catcher or a corner every game. I'd rather take the poor D in the OF, where hopefully a healthy Guti & Saunders can cover enough ground to make Morse look passable. So we need a catcher for half a season, who can work well with our pitchers, and be a quality backup for the second half when Zunino is up.

As far as getting rid of Smoak, I hope the path we take there is by sending him to Tacoma for the year. With Morales & Morse both headed for free agency at the end of the year, I don't want to toss Smoak out just yet. Let him work things out in the minors, and have him compete for a spot in 2014.

By mid-season:

2B Dustin Ackley
3B Kyle Seager
LF Michael Morse
1B Kendrys Morales
DH Jesus Montero
C Mike Zunino
RF Michael Saunders
CF Franklin Gutierrez
SS Brendan Ryan

When Montero catches, Morales DH's, & Morse plays 1B.
