Simply put, would you value an ex-player's opinion on a sports subject over someone who hasn't played the sport but may research it?

In a word, yes.

I remember years ago listening to Ron Hextall talk about watching hockey with his father Dennis, who was a solid NHL forward in his day. Dennis would make a comment about a goaltender allowing a soft goal, and Ron would be totally shocked, because from his goaltender's viewpoint he could see that the other goaltender had no chance on that shot.

I'm sure it's like that for every sport at every position.

Not at all. Have you listened to these players? A lot of them are idiots.

You don't need to have played to understand the sport.

This is an absolutely absurd notion.
