Not sure if anyone has heard of this yet but its gotten pretty big from reddit. Myself and several of my friends have purchased this game to play this mod and absolutely love it.
Its a Zombie mod for the Arma 2 game. You start out as just a soldier with a pretty worthless pistol capable of killing a few zombies but not much more. The point to this game is to scavenge supplies from abandoned buildings around this massive open world that has countless buildings and hundreds of zombies that the amount scales to the amount of players in the world. Most games consist of 50 players and 800 zombies at any one time.
This game is a bit more on the hardcore side if you compare it to MW3 or BF3. You run around with not much of a hud. There is no in game compas, watch, map, ect.. unless you find them laying around or on the bodies of other players you have slain to take their loot.
The game is perma death so to speak. If you die you get teleported to a random spot in the world after respawning and you lose everything you had earned in your previous life but there is the chance you could find your way back to your body to loot everything you owned before it rotted or was looted by another player.
The goal here is survival as is any zombie/apoc type game. You have to scavenge food, drink, medical supplies that effect different injuries, tons of weapons, ammo, clothing skins, nightvision goggles, ect. You can kill animals and take their meat with your trusty hunting knife.
Your character will degrade overtime and become weak, slow, and even die if you dont take care of these things so there is alot to manage. You can also find vehicles and such around the world that are repairable if you find the parts you need to do so.
You also have to watch out for Zombies. Each town has zombies located in them. Of course zombies are going to camp out around grocery stores, firehouses, churches, and other places of interest. You have to use your ability to sneak around them and avoid aggro to get into these places to loot gear that may be there. Firing off a loud gun attracts massive amounts of zombies while a more quiet gun may only attract 2 or 3 in the vicinity.
If you are into these types of games I highly suggest you take a look into this mod and the awesomeness it brings. Will provide a few links to show the game off. If you do find yourself wanting to play you need to purchase the Arma 2: Combined Operations pack on steam for $30 and follow a set of small changes to mod the game to play.

I've read a bit about it in recent weeks, and I must say it seems to be one of the most interesting mods in recent years. Unfortunately I don't have Arma 2 yet. Hopefully it goes on sale during Steam's summer sale, and then I can give this a go. _________________

Sadly Arma 2 was on sale on Amazon like 2 weeks ago for 15 bucks.. I missed it myself since I only heard about this game after. _________________

Interesting. I'll keep an eye on it on Steam and might pick it up.
I love zombie games (Poured tons of hours into L4D and L4D2, as well as Zombie Panic!), and this sounds like a ton of fun. _________________

My laptop can't handle this game, but I do have about 1000 saved up for Xmas, maybe an early gift?
I saw a series on youtube and got hooked on just watching it, can't imagine playing it. _________________

HOLY CRAP!!!
This is the game I was dreaming of...well...a really buggy and early version of it. I tried it out yesterday and love it. The popularity is spreading like wild fire too. I think this is the next Counter Strike, someone will get the developers and make this into a standalone game.
This is what gaming in today's age should be about, nonscripted events where you pretty much develop your own storylines. Yet developers are still playing in kiddie sandboxes.
This is like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. only online. The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. team is actually working on a multiplayer game too I've read. _________________ Equal Opportunity Hater

I thought that too, but it seems that it was actually developed (possibly just the "lead developer") by one of the Arma 2 guys. Or at least someone working for the company.

That same article says that Bohemia Interactive are looking to include official support for the mod in their next patch though, so it will be interesting to see what kind of resources they devote to that. _________________

Well they pulled Rocket and atleast one other person off Arma3 to work on this game full time. Supposedly there is already a working mod for the Arma3 engine that can support 100-200 players in a world. Looking forward to this but it is a little ways off. Do think they plan on selling Dayz as a standalone game in the future for Arma3. _________________

At this pace Day Z will be its own standalone game. This is something that can and will appeal to the passes as soon as they're done playing in the Call of Duty sandbox. Nobody really cares about Arma except some dedicated hardcore players. _________________ Equal Opportunity Hater

Is this fun to play even if you don't have any friends that play it? And how much does it cost? _________________

Cost is whatever price you pay for Arma II, which is usually $30. The mod is free.
As far as playing with friends, this is actually built perfectly to play with strangers. It's a zombie apocalypse and you are stranded. You meet complete strangers pretty much randomly. That stranger could be a threat or not, depending on the person playing the game. That's the beauty of nonlinear gaming. _________________ Equal Opportunity Hater

Well, I'm hooked. I just played for an hour or so after eventually getting ARMA 2 and DayZ working.
First life:
Spawned in the middle of nowhere. Ran across open land and through some trees for a while. I found a shack, searched inside and just found some used cans and a hunting knife. Cool, a weapon, I thought. But you don't seem to be able to equip the knife. When I left the shack I ran face first into a zombie. After failing to equip the knife, I ran away. He chased. Surprise: I didn't know zombies could run. He seemed to run at the exact same speed as me, so he chased me for a few mins until I found a town and three of the zombies there trapped me and took me down whilst I was searching for weapons.
Second life (after sitting on the "you are dead" screen for 5 mins trying to figure out what to do):
Spawned with some decent sized buildings near by. Ran over there to find a little base of some sort with two hangar-type buildings and a control tower. Ran away from a zombie by climbing a ladder up to the tower. Went down inside and found a HAND GUN. YES. Went back upstairs to find that the zombie had followed me up. Shot him about five times with supreme satisfaction.
Then I went for an explore around the hangars. Found some more ammo, bandages, and a can of coke. Also found a windscreen for a car (because, why not?). Decided to head back to where I came from and OH CRAP A PERSON. Wasted about 7 shots freaking out about seeing a person who didn't even seem to notice me. I hid in the hangar for about 2 mins then decided to go try to find him. I lost him but found a little town nearby. I went upstairs in a storage building onto a catwalk type of thing. After seeing three zombies follow me up the stairs I decided to vault over the edge and run away. The problem was that when I hit the ground, my legs shattered. So I'm stuck in prone mode and bleeding out. I killed those three zombies from there and crawled out into the open, killed a couple more zombies, then ran out of ammo and got eaten or whatever it is they do, content that at least I'd taken 9 zombies to hell with me from that life. _________________

What you need to know when you start:
-You will spawn on the southern beach. There will be some players here camping the higher value places, like medical tents, because they know people spawn here and are looking for easy player kills.
-Zombies have to walk when indoors, so if a bunch are chasing you, look for a big barn or a hanger, run in there, and once they're all inside, leave, and they won't catch up to you. Also, if you zig zag through trees, you can usually lose zombies.
-Food and drink are essential, so if you find coke/pepsi/beans/pasta, take them. This isn't the time to be picky.
-If you go north, you'll be more likely to find good guns, but its hard to make it there without any weapon, so if you can find a hatchet, you'll be in much better shape to travel and find a gun. About halfway up the map my friend and I found plenty of weapons, he got a Lee Enfield, I got a CZ550 Sniper.
-Don't be very trusting of other players. If you have a gun and another player is running up on you, you're best off to just shoot first, and ask questions later. Most people play this game with the intention of player killing, so you are better off not taking the chance.
If you're playing with people, you need to have the map nearby (either on another screen, ready for alt+tab, or printed out) so that you can find each other. In your spawn chances are you'll be near one of two main cities, Elektro and Cherno, so the outskirts of those are good for meeting up.
For your first time playing, you might want to play in a low population server (so one with less than 10 players in it) just to get used to everything.
It takes a little time to figure some things out, but once you get it, its really fun. _________________
