Today is officially the opening of the Arizona Cardinals OTA practice period, of which the CBA now allows 10. The team will work out today, Wednesday and Thursday of this week, then resume May 29th. I will be posting practice reports and player attendance all week long, as they come in.

It's expected to be between 102 and 106 degrees today in the Valley. The guys who aren't used to that type of heat, the rookies and free agents, are gonna get a helluva taste of it today.

Sounds like it's in the high 90s for the guys out there right now with the temp still creeping.

Apparently something bad happened to Jeff King. On crutches with a brace on his right knee. Could be major, more news coming.

Jeff King apparently suffered a torn quad tendon some time ago. He's already had surgery and Whiz said he expects him back by training camp. No idea what this means going forward for him.

In other news, attendance seemed pretty high. 5th round selection Senio Kelemete was really the only notable absentee. He's restricted from attending due to UW still being in school sessions. Line up wise, William Gay lined up as the starter opposite Patrick Peterson in the secondary, ahead of AJ Jefferson. Greg Toler's still on the mend and Fleming's obviously gonna be worked in slowly with Whiz and Horton, Gay starting over them isn't an indication of anything. Starting over AJ? Maybe...

Nothing really a surprise. King going down to a injury was odd but stuff like that happen. More reps for the younger players.

More lineup notes, even though none of these are a surpise and could very well mean nothing come September:

-Kevin Kolb was the starting quarterback
-Andre Roberts lined up as the starter opposite Larry Fitzgerald. Michael Floyd ran with the 3rd team unit, opposite Stephen Williams. Early Doucet and DeMarco Sampson ran as the 2nd unit
-Jeremy Bridges lines up as the starting RT

Interesting, I like seeing Sampson running ahead ahead of Stephen Williams. Pretty much what I would excpet from OTAs as far as lineup goes. I think Gay starting over Jefferson is bad for AJ, with that said. Interested to see if Skelton plays with the 1s tomorrow.

No surprises at all in who is running where. Floyd and Massie were always going to start lower on the DC, have to earn your spot.

Secondary is interesting, they supposedly called the unit 1a and 1b probably becasue of the outrageously deep competition we have at the #2 CB spot, and for the Nickel/FS/Rover role.

Quote:
Lineups mean little right now, but William Gay was working on the top unit at cornerback with Patrick Peterson (although the secondary coaches were careful to call their lineups 1a and 1b right now).

I assume it was Jefferson and Toler working on the 2nd team at CB.

We are also going to almost have three starters at the CB spot. We ran a lot of 5 DB packages last season, and by a lot I mean 50% and up, I don't have numbers, but that is a gut feeling.

Big Dan reportedly showed up at 327 today. Looking through the picture gallery, he looks pretty good.

This could be huge.

If he can play good snaps it means we can rotate on the DL more at end, it means we can go for a Big 4 at the front and still create pass rush with Dockett and Campbell on the outsides. It gives us a whole lot more scheme versatility.

Also; video up on AZCardinals of some bits of the first day, one thing that was interesting to me; Kolb and Skelton started to throw at the same time (Once), Skelton got the ball out far quicker. (Really cannot read anything into this however)

It changes the whole ball game for us defensively. It really does. If Big Dan's in shape and on his game(Which he has been when he's been in shape), we're going to see a big difference in our defense, I truly believe that.

I liked seeing Floyd making catches on the video. He had one that looked like was going to go off the tip of his fingers and he was able to haul it in. Excited!

I'm glad that I am out of the AZ heat for the summer.

I am excited to see how Big Dan and the corners look at OTAs. Plus all of our new offensive linemen.

From Darren Urban's twitter page:

"I don't believe in reading too much into OTAs, but it's been hard not to notice Darnell Dockett as disrupting menace during 11-on-11 work."

That's good to hear. He was pretty average last year.
