What can you guys tell me about Syracuse junior strong safety Shamarko Thomas? What do you see as his main strengths/weaknesses? Where do you see him projecting in the NFL best position-wise?
At quick glance, he seems somewhat short for the safety position although he does have good size. I have read several comments regarding his elite raw physical measurables (including a reportedly very fast 40 yard dash time) and wonder if he is a top-tier safety prospect or maybe a potential candidate to see if he can play cornerback (might be unlikely if he hasn't been given the shot at Syracuse)?

He is an absolute FREAK athlete. Sub 4.3 speed and ripped. He's really good in run defense, is a solid tackler, and can lay a good hit. He's short for a SS, which could hurt him, and he doesn't have great ball skills or back-pedalling. I wouldn't be surprised if Shamarko has a huge year this year, but I also wouldn't be surprised if he's hampered with nagging injuries that he seems to get every year.

I'll tell you this much; I'm from OLHS (where Shamarko graduated from) and he came to OLHS after I graduated but I watched some games. He was originally a linebacker, even for Syracuse which explain his exceptional tackling ability.
Thing is, no NFL scouts know about him... yet.
He has potential to be a 1st-round pick... Also undrafted free agent.
I'm also a Steelers fan, his talent would very much suit Polamalu's position which is a Joker, attacking everywhere, hit players so hard that their girlfriends died, he's a good kid with great academic record, and he's a true athlete (got a great track record but of course, his teammate Justin Hunter had a better track record, who currently play for the Tenn).
If your team employs Cover 2, he'd be undersized to play the safety, doesn't backpedals like a poster mentioned earlier, and gambles little too much. So you'd have to find a scheme that fits him best and that's where he will excel at next level.
As a prospect, I still love him. |

I doubt that's true. I very nearly put him in my Top 5 rankings for SS in the preseason. Him and Kenny Vacarro of Texas were neck and neck. I won't be a bit surprised if he ends up being the 2nd SS taken because of his elite measurables.
Watching him, I definitely agree with the people who are saying that you need to find a scheme that will let him play down hill. He'll do a lot of damage if he can do that.
As for a possible comparison, Donte Whitner comes to mind as one. _________________

| I don't know about whitner. Whitner sure is physical, yes but... he's far from a blitzing safety. Thomas meet the category of bob sanders, adrian wilson, polamlu, and other safeties. |

Forget 40 times, his ability to get from point A to point B on the football field is tremendous. His reaction time is excellent and has an extra gear to close on the ball. If he can stay in one piece he'll be good. _________________
