Nick Eason had a message to his Cardinals teammates during the off-season: “Whatever you guys did last year made us 8-8,” the veteran defensive tackle told them, “so you got to do something different this year.” In this case, Eason, in his 10th season, decided to show by example. How could he change? That part was easy. Since entering the NFL, Eason has steadily gained weight. He started around 290, held it for a while, and then gained about 5 pounds every season. Last year, forced into the starting lineup because of injuries to teammates, Eason realized something. He was too heavy.

“I realized that I could probably help myself and extend my career if I lost a little weight,” Eason said Thursday after participating in the Cardinals’ organized team activities.

The result: He changed his diet and took up boxing.

“I like the sport of boxing and I saw how well-conditioned those guys are in,” Eason said. “If you don’t believe it, try to box three minutes. That’s a long time when you’re fighting.”

Eason says he’s down to 282, about a 40-pound difference from last season. The last time he weighed as much: “Probably my junior year in college,” Eason said with a laugh. Recently, he put on a 40-pound vest and ran around, just to see what it was like carrying around the added weight.

“The difference is huge,” Eason said. “I feel a lot quicker now. I have a lot more endurance. … I think that’s going to help this team win more football games this year.”

This could actually be a pretty big deal for us, as depth along the defensive line is an issue and Eason was never much more than a filler player at 320+ pounds. At 280, I'm intrigued.

Was he not the NT after Dan went down. Could he even play NT again at 280 or will he see more time at DE.

He started at the nose in Big Dan's absence but only played roughly 20 plays a game, rotating qwith David Carter.

If Dan stays healthy and Eason moves into the nose tackle role that David Carter played last season. he could absolutely do it I think.
