Tony Romo is currently 32 years old. He is coming off arguably one of his best, if not his best, seasons of his career. He has missed time in two separate seasons due to injury (albeit not necessarily severe injuries). We've seen quarterbacks like Manning and Brady sustain success into their mid-30s.
My question is...when do we draft the heir apparent to Romo and groom him to takeover when that time comes? We saw what happens when a team (specifically this team) neglected to do this in the past post-Aikman and the myriad of journeyman and jokers it went through until it came across Romo.
Does it happen next year? In 2014? In 2015? I certainly do not believe we have the answer already on the roster (I'm sorry, but McGee does not give me much confidence as a backup, let alone a potential starter). Personally, next years' draft class seems to be brimming with potential franchise QBs and we could see five go in the first round alone. I think even if we do make the playoffs and win (or walk away with a Lombardi), we need to grab and groom the next quarterback next season...preferably with a high draft pick. _________________

I imagine they continue to try and develop a mid to late round pick _________________

There are alot of QBs that should have 1st and 2nd rd grades next year. I see a replacement being drafted in Rd 2 next year. I like the kid from VT. _________________

I would like to see us draft someone every year. Doesn't have to be a high pick, but just a pick every year. In hope of having someone in place well in advance. _________________

I'd pass...personally, I wouldn't mind seeing someone like Murray (UGA) or Jones (Oklahoma) in a Cowboys uniform next season. _________________

I point out each and every year that we should draft a QB each and every year with a late round pick. In this case, we need to see how well/poorly Romo performs this season before deciding his ultimate fate.
For example, if he gets hurt and we tank, then we should draft a QB if 1) he's the BPA, and/or 2) Romo's injury was so extensive that it will either end his career or significantly reduce his ability to play.
If Romo plays well and we still stink, then a mid- or late-round pick is always a great idea.
If Romo plays well but a guy like Landry Jones or Logan Thomas fall to us with a late 1st round pick, then using a pick there and grooming the player for a season or two is a great idea as well.
Ultimately, what we do at the QB position depends on how we perform, the specifics behind those performances, having the right opportunity to draft a QB, and ensuring that we select one who is the BPA. _________________

Are quarterbacks ever the BPA? I mean at picks 1 and 2 this year, yes. But over the first round the past two years, they're getting overdrafted on ability level, with their value obviously skyrocketing in that they're by far the team's most important position.
On the other hand, with all the teams that have made commitments to young QBs, maybe next year one will drop enough to make him solid value. _________________

I think that, starting next draft, we should start looking for our Aaron Rodgers opportunity.
No need to force it, but should the opportunity present itself, we shouldn't pass. _________________

Before RGIII exploded, I figured Dallas would be drafting around 20 and I was hoping we would take him. _________________

As long as we don't hang onto the fail that was Stephen McGee any longer I'll be happy. _________________

Are we gonna keep 6 Qb's on the roster then? Every guy we draft has 1 year with limited reps to develop, before we dump him and draft another? I'm all for drafting a qb anywhere but the first next year. It has to be a value pick, though. |

Since there are a lot of quality QB's in the 2013 draft class, I think we should take one early next year. If Tyler Wilson of Arkansas slips to the 2nd round, we should take him.
Although, for name purposes only, I think Oklahoma's Landry Jones should be a Cowboy. _________________

It's a matter of churning the roster. So no, we would not keep 6 QBs. _________________

So explain to me where the qb development will occur, when they only have one year? Hey we're gonna draft you to play qb for us, but we like to draft a qb every year, so you're not gonna be around long. |
