I'm not sure I'd call it a steal. Its about what he should be getting.

He's 31, coming off an injury, and hadn't ever been super productive bulkwise outside of his quick start last season.

Good deal for the Bills, and Jackson seems happy as well. He may be 31, but he was arguably the best back in the league before being placed on IR.

This is how you do RBs. Great value signing.

He's 31, but has low mileage.

Great deal for Bills, but also nice for Jackson to get paid

I am just glad that Jackson seems happy with the deal, because he could easily have expected more. He only became the #1 RB for the Bills in 2010, when Marshawn Lynch was given to Seattle, and then last year he was already performing like one of the top few RBs in the league. Going into the game in which he went to IR, he was the #1 RB in the entire NFL in both rushing yards and total yards from scrimmage.

sure he is 31, but he doesn't seem to have too much wear or tread on his tires.. yes he had a season ending injury last year.. but I thought that Fred would be getting a better deal than 2/8.. that's a miniscule number for a HB when healthy is arguably top 10.. who is also the Bills workhorse, who when on the field makes the Bills offense run smoother. So I guess that's a good deal for Buffalo, but I think Fred got low balled.

Went and compiled this for anyone interested.

3794 NFL rushing yards
731 NFL Europe rushing yards
2630 UIF rushing yards

7155 "professional" rushing yards. Obviously he wasn't taking the same hits in NFL Europe and the UIF as in the NFL, but his legs are about as "fresh" as you would expect from someone his age. He's got some wear on the tires.

Out of curiosity, why did you use yards and not carries?

Because yards are something that you can easily look across and see that it is similar to another player. Carries takes more looking up to compare. I've also heard/read that the "wheels start to come off" at about 7-8000 yards. I'm not sure exactly how accurate that is, or even if I'm misremembering that, but year.

However, if you would prefer carries..

817 NFL rushing carries
157 NFL Europe rushing carries
550 UIF rushing carries

1524 "professional" carries. That would fit him in at 68th in NFL history, if those were all NFL carries. The yardage total would put him at 52nd.

So there's some guidelines if you want to compare his career to other players. Obviously, he played against a different competition for a good portion of those, but it's just food for thought.

More of a slap in the face if you ask me. Below average money for a supposed top 10 RB and terrible length. Though I understand he is 31.

That's pretty much market value for an aging RB.

It was smart of him to take that deal.
