Per @jaguarsinsider by the way
Edit: Johnny O says it's just because of the number of guys at CB.
Probably did this to give him time to catch on elsewhere. _________________

Wow, that's surprising even though we do have a load of CB's on the roster. He played pretty well last season. He was the lone mainstay in a CB corps that was dinged up, yet still managed to get the job done. _________________

This. They must be really sure Mathis will be ready to go and that Ross and Middleton are better options for the money. I remember him signing a pretty decent deal last season, which I suspect is the driving force behind the release (as well as the depth of talent at the position).
I doubt he stays on the market very long. _________________

This...I figured we'd get thru some of the preseason at least before any of the veteran corners were released just b/c of questions about Mathis. I'm a little on the fence about this move especially considering the injury issues we had at the position.

Honestly, I would rather have let Middleton walk, but I'm sure the money was an issue - Coleman had a decent sized contract, while Middleton is on a 4th round tender (I believe).
Mathis and Cox both seem to get kicks every season, especially Cox.
Rod Issac may have given them something to have confidence in. I know he was switched to safety last season, but he was drafted to be a project corner and will still be the 4th guy if that is the case. _________________

He was probably due some type of bonus. There's also a chance they pretty much knew he wouldn't be worth the contract, so they gave him an opportunity to try to latch onto a significant role somewhere else. _________________

I don't think it had to do with money. Was only due like 1.75 mil. They either really like Harris or Issac in the nickel. _________________

yeah..he got like a 3 million dollar signing bonus last year and was only due his base salary from what I read on ESPN (take it for it's worth). I'm sure Gene has his reasons, but it just seems like an odd time to release a guy at a positition where we had numerous injury issues last season. Just would like to hear Gene explain this one.

It makes sense with all the guys we have there.
Derek Cox
Rashean Mathis
Aaron Ross
William Middleton
Mike Harris
Rod Issac
Ashton Youboty
All could possibly have outplayed him in an open camp.
And Kevin Rutland is getting a roster spot because of how well he played on ST last year.
Sucks because I think he was one of the better of the bunch. I think he or Middleton were the 4th and 5th best CB on the roster. _________________

It looks okay now on paper, but so many of those players have question marks. Cox and Mathis have had troubles with injuries, Harris and Issac are completely unproven, Youbouty is just a guy. And to top it off, Mathis, Middleton and Cox are set to hit free agency next offseason. This is a position that could get thin real quick both during the season, and going into 2013. _________________

I'd add Kevin Rutland to that list also. I think he has some potential. But, we have plenty of corners and Coleman wasn't versatile enough. All of these corners minus Isaac and Harris can play inside or outside. _________________
