Quote:
Bottom Line
A physical specimen with a rare size-speed combination, Clowney was not as impactful as a junior while playing through injuries and being forced to deal with opposing offenses that fully accounted for him with extra chip protection. Was a 20-year-old junior affected by turnover on the defensive coaching staff. Could benefit tremendously from a stable positional coach and strong, veteran mentor on the defensive line who will hold him accountable, show him the way and serve as a father figure. Is one of the most unique talents in the draft and could easily be a double-digit sack producer in the pros from either end. Is every bit worthy of the first overall pick and will immediately upgrade a defensive line and improve the production of those around him.

Love the pick we made. Clowney is clearly the best prospect in the draft and with no QB's worth taking we had to take him.

All I have to say is

"RIP LUCK"

It will be cool when he decides to show up and play. But, it sucks cause he can't cover so teams will know he is just going to rush.

Great pick. He was the only option besides trading down.

You always go BPA, especially early! We have so much potential for a scary front 7, and we don't have a big NT like Nix, yet.

JJ already called Clowney and said he is taking him under his wing

Rick also said Clowney will be a 34 OLB but will drop down on passing downs.

Smith said Clowney will not really drop into coverage, but expected to set the edge vs the run.

I'm not a fan of the pick, I would have rather Khalil Mack being a Texan because he can play at all of the LB positions and DE.

That being said, now that Clowney is a Texan, I'm trying to think positively. With Smith basically saying he won't drop in coverage, I think that means he's on the line as more of a DE in a 4-2-5 type nickel D rather than 3-3-5, which BOB already said would be used a lot. If that's the case, I'm a little more at ease with the pick. Like I said, I wasn't a fan of the pick, but I'm in "wait and see" mode with BOB and Smith and I'll give them the benefit of the doubt until proven wrong.

Meh.

Lazy guy looking for a payday. Considering it is essentially a law of nature in football that if you try to protect yourself from injury, you're going to get injured, but also that he avoided that fate last year by effectively not playing, karma would dictate he "dings" himself (to recall Kubiak's favorite term for it) and doesn't play this year.

I have a feeling pick 33 will be infuriating. I'm thinking it will be Carr, Garappolo, Mettenberger, or an incredibly over drafted defensive player.

Love the pick. If we stayed at 1 we had to go with him. I know we think he is lazy but this guy stepped on the football field as a true freshman and was a force in the SEC. He peaked as a sophomore and basically played to not get hurt as a junior. I think he will come in with a chip on his shoulder and be a dominant force off the edge. Love the pick and I think our defense just got a lot better immediately.

Clowney is going to wear number 90, which was his high school and the number of our 2006 1st overall draft pick, whatever his name is. Very Happy

Q and A with Clowney

I'm good with this pick as long as guys like Cushing and Watt can keep Clowney focused and motivated. Also O'Brien doesn't seem like the kind of guy that will tolerate a lazy player.
