Wait a minute.... a few people think many of the later round selections are going to replace the 2nd string players. I think a few might. But not many beyond the 4th round will displace the vets.
'The Blair Walsh Project' may have scared the daylights out of Longwell when his name was announced. But he is going to be a KO specialist, to help Longwell make it 1 or 2 more years to the end of his contract, while learning to be a more accurate FG kicker. The versatility of some other players will enable the Vikings to carry two Ks on the active roster.
The DE and TE/FB selected have some good competition ahead of them, so they may go to the PS, as might some other rookies drafted after round 3.
So, most Vikings backups can mimic Alfred...

I would say, Michael Jenkins. We picked up Simpson and 2 WR's by the 4th round. He might stick around this year for depth, but he won't be here next year. Might even get rid of him this year and his 3 plus million..
I think there will be a good chance that Harvin might get moved out of the slot and Wright could be that guy. Harvin, Childs, and Wright will aventually be our starting WR's. Simpson could be that change of pace guy. I really like what the Vikings did in trying to help Ponder.. To me, that was our biggest problem and I think we might of fixed it... |

Probably so, mainly because there are 1 year deals for the FAs signed, and rookie CBs are uncertain at this point.
But with all that competition, why retain him on the active roster if the others actually play better than him? He could be sent to the PS and retrieved in 2013 if the vet CBs signed under 1 year deals don't pan out, or leave for greener pastures. _________________

The coaching staff should be worried. They did get some new players but face it, they have been the most underperforming part of the organization for a while now and they will have the spotlight on them pretty brightly this season.
There are going to be a boatload of new faces on the team on every unit and the best unit's coach was sacked and replaced this year so there is going to be a huge amount of pressure on them to get all of these new pieces integrated into the system and playing together as a unit and that has not exactly been something they have been able to hang their hats on in the past.
The talent may have been upgraded but there is going to be a heck of a lot of development before that talent reaches it's potential. I hope the team can pull this off but I am not convinced they have the staff to do it. |

When you're coming off a 3-13 year, your team is not that good. That includes the second unit. So yes, I think all players have a chance to replace 2nd stringers from last year. |

I think atleast 8 rookies will make the final roster.
Kalil, Robinson, Wright, Childs, Smith, Ellison and Blanton are locks based on where they were picked. Cole is probably a likely candidate to make the roster as well, given how litlte depth MN has at LB.
that basically leaves Walsh and Guyton. Walsh is probably a PS player, and Guyton as well.
So MN didnt have too many picks as most will make the final roster, and the remaining two will probably be on the practice squad. |

This is from Tom Pelissero's twitter.

Marcus Sherels. I think the only reason he was on last year's roster was to be a punt returner. If they are grooming Jarius Wright for that role like Spielman indicated, there's not really a reason to keep Sherels around. |

Whoever is on the bubble depends upon how many are kept at each position.
My guess is that with the ability of Blanton to potentially back up at both CB and S, that might make one of the expected depth players at CB be on the fringe of getting cut...which could mean we see the end of the Asher Allen era, as I see the following:
CB1 Chris Cook
CB2 Zack Bowman
CB3 Antoine Winfield
CB4 Josh Robinson
CB5 between Chris Carr, Asher Allen, and Brandon Burton
Marcus Sherels is all but officially gone. _________________
