NFL policy states that, “[a]bsent aggravating circumstances, discipline for a first offense will generally be a fine of two-seventeenths (2/17)” of his base salary, up to a maximum of $50,000. The problem for Blackmon is the phrase “aggravating circumstances,” which are defined by the policy as “including but not limited to felonious conduct or serious injury or death of third parties, and/or if the player has had prior drug or alcohol-related misconduct.” If there are “aggravating circumstances, “increased discipline up to and including suspension may be imposed.”
Blackmon has “prior . . . alcohol-related misconduct,” thanks to a DUI incident in college that resulted in a fine. Though the league apparently has abandoned the practice of disciplining players for pre-NFL behavior that results in a judicial resolution after the player’s NFL career has begun, the league wouldn’t be punishing Blackmon for his past DUI. Instead, the NFL would be taking his history into account when meting out discipline for the more recent incident.

That is really drunk. In Ontario, .08 will get you a criminal record, and .05 will get your licence suspended for three days on the first offence. _________________

You would think that he would have some friends that would step in and prevent him from making that idiotic decision to drive. I was high on Blackmon before this, but now I'm very glad the Vikings did not draft him. This is not only going to cost him in the courts, but the Jags are going to be able to save a little money on signing him you would think. |

yeah, exactly. it's NOT what they needed right now.
their new owner is in sort of a similar situation to Zygi and the Love Boat era - starting off with your first NFL team ownership duties and then a personal scandal hits right away. _________________

I can't imagine this should come as a complete surprise to anyone. While he's never been in serious trouble with the law, mistakes happen. Thankfully, he never hit anyone (we've had a rash of that recently here in Topeka), and hopefully, he'll learn from it.
But, I don't feel sorry for the Jags one bit. They knew of his history, and were willing to take the chance. If the Vikings didn't have more severe issues with the O-Line and the secondary, even that history wouldn't have deterred me from taking him, because I think he'll be a good player.
And I doubt that it will have any impact on the money that he will get, but it will certainly have some of an impact on the contract language. _________________

While mandatory alcohol and substance abuse treatment rarely works...I do hope that Blackmon gets some help and engages in some active reflection upon something that seems to be problem...namely, alcohol abuse. |

The fact that you even put yourself in that kind of situation seems ridiculous. I'm not trying to blame him, because I don't know all the details, but he shouldn't put himself in this kind of "hole".
I hope he learns from this, and is never put in this kind of situation again. If he's going to drink, I'd say just stay home and do it. _________________

| He needs to show some discipline. If it was a couple of days after the draft, I'd be ok with it, but he needs to get prepared for football. I think the Jags are going to be disappointed they didn't draft Floyd come 5 years. |

Justin Blackmon: “First off, I want to apologize to [G.M.] Gene Smith and Mr. Khan and his family and coach Mularkey. The whole organization, teammates, everyone that I with my poor judgment over the weekend that I brought bad press to. I want to apologize to fans or people that looked up to me, because what I did, the decision I made over the weekend, that might be questioning who I am now. I just want to apologize for that, and just let people know that’s not who I am, that’s not who I’m going to be. I’m looking to make things better, and I will continue to try to do that, from starting yesterday on.”
Blackmon said he doesn’t have a problem with drinking alcohol. “I just think I made a poor choice . . . I put myself in a bad situation . . . it was completely my fault, I’ve just got to make better judgment on that."

Probably more to come. The Jags are in a difficult position, with a prospect who led the team to believe he was past his character issues. At issue will be how much guaranteed money to pay him, as well as possibly including an offsetting clause that would allow the Jags to move on much easier if he busts. Im sure Blackmon's agent is pushing as hard as he can for deals similar to Kalil and Claiborne, even though Kalil and Claiborne did not have flaws coming out. |

Passing on Blackmon was absolutely, positively, and without a doubt the right thing to do. Seriously, what is it about Wide Receivers? |

yes it was.
i do believe however that Spielman had everyone wondering if we would draft him at #3, even though i doubt they ever intended to.
good job, Spielz! _________________
