Is the nfl considering replacing knockoffs?
| Quote: | Sean Gregory of TIME Magazine indicates in this week's cover story that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is floating the idea that instead of kickoffs, the kicking team would be given the ball at its own 30-yard line with a 4th-and-15 situation.
Essentially, this is an effort to give the "kicking" team a way to retain possession as the onside kick currently does. |
Wtf! God-dell needs to go... Seriously _________________

Adrian Peterson has been KILLIN it. Dude could possibly get 2K yards the way he is playing. Has 125 rush yards at half against the "vaunted" bears D. He has gotta be the comeback player of the year. _________________ RIP SSF

The idea is that kickoffs are the single most dangerous play in all of football with concussions occurring at a rate of one in every five (all other plays are 1 in 14).
The ramifications of removing the kickoff are pretty significant. Still, if it can keep the guys who can least afford concussions from getting them at much more higher rate, it might be worth it. |

On one side: line up ten men (and a kicker) weighing between 250-300 lbs and have them sprint 60 yards towards 11 other men weighing between 250 and 300 lbs.
20 mph = 8.94 m/s
250-300 lbs = 113.4 - 136.1 kg
Let's assume an impact time of 0.1 second.
F = ma = mv/t
= (113.4) (8.94) / 0.1
~ 10,138 N
~ 2279 lbs
= (136.1) (8.94) / 0.1
~ 12167 N
~ 2735 lbs
So, basically, this is preventing two guys crashing into each other with each having an equivalent force of an one ton block.
Perhaps that explains why they're looking into it?
Oh, by the way, the number one backer of doing away with kickoffs? Greg Schiano, not Roger Goodell. He came to that realization sitting in the ICU waiting for Eric LaGrand to wake up. You know, the guy who cannot walk on his own right now? |

I agree Woz. On one hand I have the same reaction as Turtle. On the other hand I know that alot of things that used to be legal (clothesline tackles) are now illegal. I can see people saying back then "just put skirts on them" when they were made illegal. So the game must and will change over time.
I'm in favor of making sure as many players as possible can have normal lives after football. _________________

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/12/10/report-changes-coming-to-ravens-coaching-staff/
Changes could be coming to Baltimore's coaching staff in the offseason. They need a scapegoat for how bad their D has looked and they are making their D coordinator out to be the scapegoat. The ravens are missing two pro bowlers and team leaders (Lewis and Suggs) their two best CBs and have had Ngata injured much of the year.
It's no surprise to me that D has struggled. _________________

They fired Cam Cameron their O-coordinator. This was long over due if you ask me. |

You know the issues with Kickoff concussions, the one thing I have to say is that even though it has the most risk pertaining to concussions, players sign up for this. They get paid to play this position and they know the risks that are involved with kick offs.
The more that they take away the more the sport is going to lose its luster. _________________

Great story about JJ Watt by Rick Riley on MFN countdown tonight. He's a great guy. Helped take care of kids in wheelchairs and they said he was like an older brother. He played basketball with them, took them to texans practices.
He's a country music fan but for them, he took them to see and meet Justin Beiber in his concert. _________________

Yes, they sign up for it. It's something they've wanted all their lives, trained for all their lives.
Still, we are learning that:
A) Lifespans for many players are significantly shorter than the average person.
B) Those post-football years can have significantly more mental problems due to repeated brain injuries.
C) That kickoffs are the most likely place to have a brain injury.
Sometimes, you need to protect people from themselves.

I believe this is a common refrain every time they make a rule change. I'm sure the guys in the 50s thought moving away from leather helmets and requiring mouth guards was ruining the game then as well.
The no-kickoff plan was one idea that was floated. It doesn't mean it will occur.
One other thing to consider: the NFL is usually(*) the leader when it comes to changing the rules to assist the lower levels play safer as well. While the men playing the NFL have signed up and get paid to play in exchange for the injury risk, what about high school kids? Remember, most of those kids are in the midst of puberty when their bodies are growing to adulthood. Injuries at that point may be more damaging over the long term.
(*) The one area where they've lagged behind colleges, high schools and Peewee leagues is in the area of concussions and helmet design. I think that kind of points to why they are making this a major point of emphasis now. |

1. you want a safer game- don't fine the hell out of them, especially with bills on monday after the game. They don't think about $ most of the time on the field. Suspend them or kick them out of the game if they have so many defenseless hits or helmet to helmet or something. That affects the team and their ability to work. That will make coaches get on them more and they will feel accountable for letting the team down.
2. Mandate they wear the safest equipment available, like you said. Helmets and other things NFL players don't wear the safest equipment because its not mandated by the league. They were supposed to mandate they wear thigh pads, yet I see most aren't. I think players are Nuts for not wearing hip pads, thigh pads and knee pads. _________________
