Like most, I believe the Vikes will get one or two compensatory draft picks in 2012; however, in all these mock drafts it seems everyone's believing the Vikes will get a 3rd Rd and a 4th Rd.
How does one determine what a team deserves as compensatory picks?
If it were based on, the player lost vs production . . . I can't see where Rice would be worth more than a 5th Rd pick and Edwards about the same, maybe a 6th or 7th.
Rice had one injury-free year where he was stellar. Edwards has been developing and might well be in for a big year this year, but last year he wasn't quite as good as hyped.
I would love to get what the mocks have been claiming, but I just hope we're not counting our chickens before the eggs hatch . . . |

Generally it comes down to players lost and their salary, so the Vikings lost Rice and Edwards that would qualify, and because of their contracts they are probably looking in the 3rd and 4th (one guy who delved into the details had them at that), and they will likely get a 7th as well. The comp picks have to add up to 32, so at the end of the 7th after any 7th comp picks are handed out for player, they start at the draft order for the first round and go up, so the Vikings will likely have one of the last picks in the draft. _________________ Gnat's Movie Reviews

There on field production is indeed less of a factor then the salary.
Why?
There lost to the Vikings is judged on what salary they commanded on the open market. The fact that he did not succeed as well on his new team didnt impact the Vikings at time of the decision. It was still a relatively "high" loss to the Vikings.
I think 1 3rd + 1 4th OR 2 4ths |

It will either be a 3rd and a 5th
or
Two 4ths.
I read that somewhere no to long ago, take it for what it's worth. _________________ Welcome to Minnesota, Greg Jennings.

Oops, I meant to say 3rd and 7th
or
Two 4ths.
| Quote: | | Now, our own college scouting/draft guru Mark has been stating that he believes that the Vikings will get two compensatory picks in the 2012 NFL Draft. He is projecting one of those picks to be at the end of the third round, and the other to be at the end of the seventh round. However, Sid Hartman's close, personal friends are telling him that it might be better than that for the Vikings. Apparently Sid is hearing that the Vikings' two compensatory picks could be fourth-rounders. |

Consider why the Vikings will get 2 or 3 comp picks this year...
lost Edwards, Rice, TJax, and Leber. I don't know if they tendered offers to each, and if that is a requirement.
signed Ayodele, Aromashadu, ...and one other player?
If Spielman believes drafting is the best way to build a team over time, consider the implication of allowing some players to leave, and replacing them via the draft, rather than mainly via free agent signings.
The net loss of players in free agency would yield a comp pick or two.
Can anyone explain why I believe the impact of such a strategy focused more on drafting players than signing free agents is positive, but not significant? _________________

We signed Jenkins as well.
Doesn't also playing factor in, which is why Rice's compensation might be a bit lower? |

I think that playing time generally just pushes a pick higher up, and necessarily bringing them lower than the money cut off lines if you look at the two articles I posted. _________________ Gnat's Movie Reviews

wasn't Aroshamadu cut? he wouldn't be factored in if he was cut, i believe. Last i knew it only mattered for FAs that reached the end of their contract and moved on. _________________

The guy from mocking the draft tends to be very good at predicting comp picks and he thinks we should get a 3, 4 and a 7th. I hope he is right.

Thanks for the feedback . . . it'll be curious what the league really does over the next two weeks for compensatory picks, as well as pulling the Saints' draft picks . . . should they lose their 1st and 2nd round picks, that will be two extra players to be considered.
If I recall Michael Jenkins ended the season on IR, didn't he? So, that wouldn't be classified as being cut. |
