| Quote: | Goodell's statement said the NFL's report is based on thousands of pages of internal documents, believed to be emails and text messages and the like, the NFL gathered with the Saints permission earlier this year. In addition, the league said its investigation, tabled in 2010 when the original accuser recanted and Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis denied the existence of a bounty scheme, was reopened some time in 2011 when the NFL received "new and credible information."
Whether that new information was provided by a person or some document remains unclear, and the league has declined to elaborate. The NFLPA, which has requested copies of the documentation and a list of players and coaches the NFL may have interviewed during the course of its investigation, has thus far received only a sort of executive summary, according to people familiar with the situation.
Consequently, the union, which concedes it was blindsided by the report, remains largely in the dark about what NFL security officials used for their findings. The league planned to include names and precise detail in its report, but retracted much of that when the Saints objected serious accusations were being leveled without a clear picture of the supporting evidence. |

I'm not sure that the "boat" metaphor will go over all that well with Vikings fans.

As to Williams, we’ve heard that there’s support within the league for a lifetime ban. There’s also concern that a banishment would not survive a legal challenge under the same antitrust laws on which the players relied a year ago today, after shutting down the union and wiping out the league’s multi-employer labor exemption. In something closer to English, the NFL consists of 32 separate businesses, and if they band together and refuse to employ Gregg Williams, the NFL could be violated the antitrust laws.
That’s why the end result could be a lengthy suspension (one year or more), and a termination of employment by the Rams, for cause. (Firing Williams for cause would cut off his right to pay. His contract undoubtedly contains a provision mandating that any legal challenges be resolved via arbitration. Arbitration conducted by the league office.)
Then, if no NFL team ever hires him again, he essentially has been banned for life, without being banned for life.

Ok, I'm no lawyer and I know I'm probably comparing apples to oranges, but I'll ask anyway:
Why can Major League Baseball ban Pete Rose for life but the NFL not ban Gregg Williams for life? Are the leagues set up that differently? I know MLB has an anti-trust exemption, but actually typing the words "anti-trust exemption" is about all I know or understand of the whole deal.

My guess, succinctly; it's something akin to lex loci....
I think the specific rule on gambling in baseball has specified penalties. But I don't believe there is a specific rule and specified penalties for bounties in NFL rules. A more general rule is applied.
Anti-trust exemption means NFL and MLB teams are exempt from Federal laws and rules regarding collusive activities. An example of a practical application of the exemption is a CBA agreement to follow a set of rules for free agency that otherwise violate employment-at-will laws. _________________

Any new articles on this? I thought we'd have a suspension or 3 by now. _________________

NFL.com has nothing. Why didn't you check there?
Tweets? Not reliable.
Reading the thread again would tell you that the decision is due on March 25.
Is there a rush .... to judgement?
I think so.

Sean Payton suspended one year. Mickey Loomis 8 game and $500,000 fine. Saints fined $500,000 and a second round pick in 2012 and 2012.

I'm not sure if it is only 1 pick, or if it is supposed to be 2012 and 2013. _________________ Gnat's Movie Reviews

| Gregg Williams suspended indefinite. Payton gone for the year. No 2nd round picks. Justice has been served. Now just take away that Lombardi trophy and wipe the records clean! |

| Maybe this is why they resigned both Guion and Evans. Wonder if Remi Ayodele will be getting a suspension, id cut they guy regardless for his affiliation with this mess, salary and lack of production aside. |

The NFL feels like they have a moral obligation, and that's the way the treated this case.
It's completely despisable what Williams and Payton did, no moral, no ethics, no role model to speak of.
I just hope the Vikings never ever have anything to do with such guys or such actions. I will stop supporting them.
The Saints should clean their house, fire Payton and everyone that was involved. There should be values that are much more important than success.
I hope that every Saints fan feels ashamed.
I also bet that legal actions will be taken by Williams at some point in time (at the time when he finds out that he won't find a job anymore). |
