Damn you guys are all doom and gloom. "Let's just start rebuilding now I guess..." Wtf? We're still a potential Super Bowl contender last time I checked. _________________

We are, but until we find out what exactly will be going on with the league come the 25th, I'm going to hold judgement. Though considering the peices we will be losing, our good, not great defense, I could see the merits of starting the rebuilding process a little early with getting max value from a tag and trade of Brees rather than prolong it for another 3-4 years with MAYBE a Super Bowl win, but a lot of 10+ win seasons that net us little to no elite talent.
Had Bountygate not came out, Brees signed an extension earlier, and we could've tagged Nicks instead, I think we all would be feeling a lot better about our position right now than we currently are. _________________

crazy thought: if Brees gets traded because of contract stuff/Saints issue then does New Orleans become the favorite for Manning? If you guys were indeed the "mystery team" that was looking at RG3 then I think the chances are high. Manning going back to New O where he grew up and his dad played, throw that in the fact that he can play little brother more than once every 4 years and it seems like a solid rumor. _________________
Drive off into the sunset, you brilliant bastard.
|

But to get into the RG3 race we would have to get the #2 pick... I think more than RG3 we'd be more in the running for Sam Bradford by trading Brees for Bradford and picks than we would trading Brees for RG3 picks.
Now I do think if Brees is gone that we will be the favorites for Manning as we'd give him an incentive based contract and would pursue Wayne as well and no team is really built like the Colts without being the Colts like the Saints, maybe even better overall considering our stable of running backs. _________________

Crazy thought.
Couldn't Brees have just signed a 1 year fully guaranteed deal for the same price as what the Franchise Tag would be.......................and allow the team to franchise one of the other guys? _________________ NEW 2011 draft prediction.

I wouldn't trade Brees before we get out punishment so they can't take away what we got and not without a guarantee that we get Payton. We're still a Good Defense away. I truly believe we have the players for that on defense. _________________ Teams: NFL:New Orleans Saints

Why would he have done that if he were seeking $23 mil/yr?? To be a nice guy?? I think he's shown where his priorities lie in regard to team vs payment. |

Whoa, whoa, whoa, are you honestly saying we're going to give you Bradford AND some of our picks for Brees? Come on. Straight up, that could be something to think about. But we're trading our young QB who we're going to have to eat a decent amount of dead cap on for a QB who is past 30 years old and we'd have to take on his 20+ million salary on a 1 year deal.
Sorry but we're not giving up picks in that deal. No doubt Brees is a much better QB than Bradford at this point in their careers but Bradford has a lot of upside and our coaches are standing by him. This trade would completely eff up our cap situation so there's no way we're giving you picks back in this deal.
But the truth is that this will never happen for the reasons I already touched on. _________________

No Jrry, stop overreacting and re-read what I said. I simply said that we weren't going to get RG3 as we'd have to trade up to the #2 pick and we would be more likely to trade Brees for Bradford and picks than for the #2 overall pick plus some more, the reasoning, although I left it out, was because the Rams already have Bradford so unless this becomes the NBA and a 3 team trade, the Saints wouldn't be getting RGIII _________________

| How does our cap look now with 14mil committed towards Brees? Our we actually in a better position to keep Nicks and Colston? |

Thats enough to get Colston, but no Nicks. Nicks wants upwards of 8-10 million a year, and we need to remember we still need to sign draft picks and depth on top of Colston/Nicks. _________________

I realize it's not going to happen, but if you know you are going to get the tag anyway.......................
Whats the rule on that anyway, how many years in a row can you tag a guy? _________________ NEW 2011 draft prediction.

Until either the team can't afford it anymore or until he says he'd rather sit out for the year than sign it... _________________
