If you joined the forums after the 2009 draft, you really missed one of the most heated times in FF's version of Cowboy nation. The draft day chatzy was like if someone tried to steal Andy Reid's dessert, fuming with rage. Hailed almost immediately by the DCRA as a terrible draft, many heated arguments ensued. Others trusted almost naively in Jerry Jones on this one, and fueling the fire even more, was that we traded our first away the year prior for underachieving WR Roy williams.
The 2009 draft finished with the Cowboys taking 12 players as follows:
Round 3, pick 5: Jason Williams LB Western Illinois
Round 3, pick 11: Robert Brewster OT Ball State
Round 4, pick 1: Stephen McGee QB Texas A&M
Round 4, pick 10: Victor Butler OLB Oregon State
Round 4, pick 20: Brandon Williams OLB Texas Tech
Round 5, pick 7: DeAngelo Smith CB Cincinnati
Round 5, pick 30: Michael Hamlin S Clemson
Round 5, pick 36: David Beuhler K USC
Round 6, pick 24: Stephen Hodge S TCU
Round 6, pick 35: John Phillips TE Virginia
Round 7, pick 18: Mike Mickens CB Cincinnati
Round 7, pick 20: Manuel Johnson WR Oklahoma
Being three years past (the mandatory judgement period for evaluating how your draft really turned out), the time to judge is upon us. What players from this draft did you have the most hope for? Which pick did you love? Which pick did you hate? (if not all like some were at the time.) Let the I told you so's begin! _________________

Yes....I believe this sums up everyones feelings to a "T." Great scene choice btw.
In all seriousness, the ONLY pick I like out of that draft is John Phillips. I think with Marty B gone he will flourish and will really help out this team. Other than him, please revert your attention back to the gif. |

I hated all of them from the moment they were selected and never hid my opinion about it. John Phillips is the only one who proved to have any significant value. _________________

| Victor Bulter provides great depth with the OLB position, IMO we didn't give Manny enough time to develop, every other pick was a bust. |

I didnt hate Hamlin or Mickens. The rest I was thoroughly disgusted about. A CBS news camera caught me throwing my pencil and stomping into the the green room at Halas Hall when we made our first pick. (I do audio for the Bears) My buddy Art was recording and sent me a still of it. That will forever be my reminder of the awful, AWFUL 2009 draft. _________________

Referring to butler as great is commical. He provides very average depth. He is aweful vs. the run and adds minimal pass rush. referring to him as providing great depth is like referring to stephen jones as a great assistant GM. They both have someone in front of them that take days off and neither have a clue how to get the job done. Providing depth yes, great depth no way _________________

It was a good thing I wasn't on here, because I remember this draft well. The stuff I was spewing when I saw this draft would have probably got me a lifetime ban... _________________

8 out of 12 picks have been cut. Buehler shouldn't be on the team come July. McGee, Butler, and Phillips are just marginal backups. And the Roy Williams trade-and-extension has got to be one of the single worst personnel decisions by any team in the past decade. Not only were the 20th and 83rd picks sacrificed, but the contract was constructed that he wasn't feasibly able to be cut until 2 and half years of futility had been endured.
Basically, no GM would have lasted after this. Unless of course that GM happens to own the team. _________________

Ignoring the RW trade, When Seattle moved up and stole Max Unger from us, it all went down hill from there.
That being said, most of the 2009 Draft was crap and even looking back it's hard to find better picks in range.
2nd - Sebastian Vollmer
3rd - Ladarius Webb (Mike Wallace was there but we just traded 1st to DET for a WR so wasn't going to happen anyways)
4th - All Crap - only Fiammetta was probably a better pick and we had 3 picks
5th - More crap and again we had 3 picks
6th - Total Crap outside of Phillips
7th - Complete Crap
I mean even going back and redrafting that year WITH 20/20 hindsight (sticking to the rounds for picks) it's a hideous draft class. Granted, Vollmer, Webb, and what we picked is way better, but most people had a horrible 2009 draft _________________

We were so handicapped to begin with without our first and third round picks. We know they were targeting Unger, Massaquoi, and McBath in the second round, and they went in the 3 consecutive picks before our selection. Then Jerry trusted Wade's man-crush on Jason Williams.
The disaster was a poor job by the front office and scouting department combined with some bad luck. _________________

It was also combined with Jerry's desire to exclusively draft backups and special teams players rather than anyone with immediate starting potential. Our draft strategy heading into that weekend placed us behind the 8 ball, and the selections only made it worse. _________________
