I don't know if this I totally accurate but in Ffmd they posted our cap situation as this:

Washington Redskins -- 87.213M Cap Space Committed; 37.787M Cap Space Available

Absolutely awesome if this in fact the true #. Cool

Well that sounds close to what we heard earlier (in the 80 millions) so I bet it is right on.

Sounds real good to me too as they will have enough room to really make some moves in the FA market as well as sign a few of ours that they have already determined they want to keep (you probably read the article the other day where Shanahan said they just finished deciding who they want to keep and will now move on to the rest of the league's FA's).

Wonder if they'll grab 2 or 3 Big Names or add across the board like last year?

I think it's 2 or 3 big names this year. We have a team that seems to be a few good to great playmakers and a better qb away from being a playoff team.

Huh? We did through most of the 2000s when Vinny was running things. We constantly had to restructure and release players to get under the cap before free agency started.

This year we don't have to do that, but teams like the steelers, who are over the cap, and need to cut players to get under are in cap trouble. We used to have to do that.

I remember when Bruce was hired his first priority was to fix the cap. Giving Haynesworth that 21 mil bonus and all the dead money coming off was a big part of that. Now some just want to start the process all over again in this free agent class Shocked . Crazy, the way successful teams do it is to resign their own draft picks who deserve extensions, not take 2 years to dig out of a mess and sign a money hungry FA to be in cap hell again. Haven't we learned by now that when big time FAs leave playoff teams to come here it isn't to build a winner, it's to get a fat payday. These teams let them go for a reason

I'm sorry, what planet are you from? What color are the unicorns there?

We had to limbo under the cap plenty of years. We ended up keeping veteran players for FAR past their expiration date because of their cap #.

So if you're saying we've never had an issue with the salary cap, then I disagree.

Apparently, teams will be able to carry over any unspent cap money from last year to this year. I was unaware of this. If this link is true, that gives the Skins somewhere around 11 million dollars more unless I am missing something.

Just a bit more info on the cap. According to this story from ESPN's John Clayton, the Redskins have as much as $47.56M to work with in FA.

And according to PCinOZ, who has done a lot of work on the Redskins' cap spreadsheets in the past, the Redskins have about $43.3M available under the cap.

What this means is that we're going to have plenty of flexibility. But don't get too carried away --- there are dozens of teams with tons of cap room, which means there is going to be a lot of money chasing a finite number of players. Assuredly some bad deals are going to be given out, so hopefully the Redskins' contract gurus are on top of their game this offseason.

Damn E, beat me to it. I was just about to post the same article. Anyways, I hope they use the $ wisely this year and don't overpay one or two underserving free agents that are just out looking to get paid. Wink

I was reading that 43.3 number yesterday too.

I also found it interesting that the Steelers were close to the cap, and the SuperBowl winning Giants will be OVER the cap unless they cut or restructure a bunch of deals. I think the Patriots were pretty high but not over too.

Wonder how close we need to be to the cap in order to field a team that contends?
