I just got my head re-attached from shaking it so much the last two years. Peyton?
Could we really ruin his legacy? Dog-gone-it we'd figure out some way to do it! Don't come here Peyton! Stay away! Save yourself! _________________

| The four biggest reasons Manning won't come here are Johnson, Hutch, Herrera, and Loadholdt. A couple of the smaller reasons would be WR1 and WR2. We are far from being "One QB away" like we were with Favre. I would feel bad for Peyton if he chose to come here. We need to focus on rebuilding. I'm not interested in being stuck in mediocrity anymore. We'll suck for a couple of years and take our lumps while getting experience. Manning would only help us get a worse draft pick. He could do better than picking us. |

All Manning did this year is truely show how bad the Colts are without him at QB. He is an instant upgrade to alot of teams in this league. ( including the Vikings ) You just don't go from 10-12 wins a season to 2 wins.. The reason was Manning. Manning alone could probably get this team to 10 wins. Adding in our other players, we could see 12-13 wins if he was our QB.. |
Manning + this team as is (no other big signings) + Solid Draft + Healthy AP = Playoffs.
I dont understand the arguement of not wanting him. The only thing I can think of is that one may thing it stunts the growth of Ponder. However, I think it would improve him for the future.
I'd rather give Manning the Money then give it to some average-below average player (since thats the realistic market we are in now) that wont make an impact.
We're still gonna be drafting for the future in this draft regardless, so I'm all for it.
Manning would make our WRs + potential drafted WR look as good as Farve did. Manning helps the defense, by keeping the offense on the field longer, so the defense has more rest and is off the feild for a longer time. Manning could also put up enough points to win in shootout matches. |

You are exactlly right. Sign Manning and maybe a CB and SS in FA. You then draft a stud LT in the 1st round ( Kalil or Rieff ) and add a OG and 2 WR's later in the draft.. This is exactlly why I think we should be the 1st team calling Manning when he gets cut.
Also, you can sign a cut player right away. If we could get Manning signed, faybe other FA's would actually want to come here seeing that we might have a chance to win the SB.. You never know.. |

I'm generally against the idea of bidding for Manning, but I have to admit that the idea of someone actually hitting Percy Harvin in stride as he streaks across the middle on a slant route gives me the chills. _________________

For me, the answer is yes. I know we have a young QB in Ponder and given the right tools, ( O-line and WR's ) He could be a very good QB for years to come. But, he is no Peyton Manning. I think the Vikings are built to win right now with AP, Allen, Greenway, Harvin, and our other young players. Why wait, when we could add a player like this and probably be in the top 5 of odds to win the SB.. Yes, win the SB. Thats how good he really is. And the best example is what Farve did. Manning is 5 years younger.. I'm all for going after him with a 5 year deal anywhere from 60-80 million.. He is still in the top 3 in my book.. The day he is released ( if let go), I would be the 1st team picking up the phone and offering him a big deal. My pitch would be " how about having a stud RB for the 1st time ever " .
A chance like this only comes around once every 10-20 years. I would say, lets jump all over this..
And your thoughts are?? |
"He only tore his ACL and might not be ready for the season, just like you weren't for last year!". Ehh, not so much anymore?
I Really do like Ponder, I think he has the skills to be a be a good-great QB for a long time in the NFL, but like you said, Peyton would be hard to pass up.
My only concern really is getting an oline in front of him, and maybe a big WR in the draft (allthough pretty much through indy, neither Harrison nor Wayne were "big" WRs).
As long as we can get him upright, 1 more solid WR, and a healthy Adrian Peterson, I'm okay with it...allthough I predict he retires in 2-3 years.. _________________

which would've been my next point.
I like Peyton Manning, but I don't think he's going to be a Viking. Even if we tried, we would be sooo outbid. _________________

I think it's living in a dream world to think Manning alone would turn the Vikings into a 13-win team. Let's not forget that the Vikings were 6-10 in 2010 with a healthy Adrian Peterson and many of the same pieces that were there in 2009 when they played in the NFCC. Many of those pieces are gone...including Berrian, Rice, McKinnie, Kleinsasser, Edwards, Leber, Griffin, Henderson, Hutchinson, Kennedy, and Phat Pat.
People have also seem to forgotten that the Colts were not only missing Peyton Manning last season...they were also missing Tom Moore, who left the team to become an offensive consultant for the Jets. Peyton and Moore were joined at the hip and was also a lot of the reason that Peyton has been so successful.
I just think it's absolutely ridiculous to even consider Manning. Signing him would do absolutely nothing positive for the franchise. Also, people talk about how Favre didn't like teaching backup QBs and wasn't very conducive to it...let's look at the track record:
Favre's backups in Green Bay- Mark Brunell, Matt Hasselbeck, Aaron Rodgers, Ty Detmer, Doug Pederson, JT O'Sullivan, Craig Nall
Peyton's backups - Steve Walsh, Mark Rypien, Brock Huard, Jim Sorgi, Curtis Painter
So, Favre helped develop 3 starting QBs and several others who had decent careers as backups...Peyton had 2 backups that were on their way out of the league and 2 other young QBs that were out of the league a year after leaving Indy.
The track record is clear...at least to me. _________________

I'm completely on board. I don't see peyton coming back if he's not physically capable of playing. So assuming he is, our offense aside from a couple new linemen isn't that far away. Even if Adrian doesn't come back 100% He's still better then any RB Peyton has ever had. So theoretically we sign Peyton. Then in my opinion it would really allow the FO to focus on fixing that piece of poop secondary and grab an offensive lineman or two and compete next year. _________________

I'm having a tough time believing that the Vikings are anywhere near to being competitive in 2012. I believe the Vikings might win 5 or 6 games at the most. There are sooooo many holes to fill, and not enough money in FA or draft choices to fill them all!
Plus!!!! No stadium agreement! A head coach on the hot seat. An offense Manning has never played in before. The best football player on the team is sidelined with a severe ACL injury! Manning would have to be daft to go to the Vikings, even if they offered him the largest contract ever!
Peyton Manning has a competitve fire inside him that will guide him to only those teams that could possibly play for a championship this season...and fellows...that team is NOT the Minnesota Vikings. |

I think a 90% healthy Manning could potentially turn around almost any team. We were 6-10 because our defense got exposed but also they were also exposed more then needed to because our offense could stay on the field long enough or put up points.
Manning would help in both of those areas by a large margin over Ponder/Webb/McNabb. Signing him would do alot of positives like give us a good chance for the playoffs (I wouldnt say that about practically any other "available" player), speed the development of the WRs, increase revenue, increase exposure again, potentially we could get some quality signings in FA (think vets on short deals - towards end of FA period).
Its absolutely ridiculus to not consider Manning, if he was willing to give Vikings a chance. Just because Farve didnt "teach" doesnt mean that Manning won't either. And even if he doesnt teach Ponder/Webb anything, at least they get to see the reads he makes and work with him in practice.
No one is suggesting we start trading away picks for players (3rd for Moss) to compete now. We are suggesting still drafting the same way (good players for the future) and adding Manning if he actually cares to play here. |

Man, I wish we were 6-10!!!! There are many, many more problems on this team then Manning can solve. Sorry to disagree with you, but I think it would be foolish to bring Manning into the kind of situation that presently exists on the Vikings. If I thought for a moment that the Vikings were a player or two away from competing for a divisional title, I would make every effort to sign him. However, he will not be as effective in anyother offense as he was with the Howard Mudd/Tom Moore system in Indy. Yes, I realize that I just called Peyton Manning a system qb. So is Eli, so is Brady. It's part of what makes them great qb's. They are within systems that maximize their talents. None of them would be as effective in a Musgrave system as they are in their present systems. |

OK, seriously. Stop going for the quick fix. And if you pass up RGIII in the draft, it will be a mistake that will haunt you for a decade although at least you'll be able to be happy that your LT is good. |
The more I think about your proposal, the more I like it. Prospects like RG III don't come along very often. The skill-set is unheard of. I think you've also pointed out that you need a decent back-up QB to be successful in this League. _________________ "No one can disguise mediocrity better than Bill Belichick." |

As a starting QB? ...Not so much. _________________
