Might be a good idea. Wink

Okay, just because we positional assignments haven't been completed yet doesn't mean we can't start formulating a game plan.

First item up for discussion:

Who should we franchise? D-Bo or Carr? Explain your reasoning too, please.

The question of franchising depends on whether or not we are going to have a chance to re-sign our guys before UFA actually opens up. If that is the case, then we make a pitch to both, and hope like heck one signs, and then the franchise question becomes much easier.

If neither signs, which honestly I see as unlikely as long as we present a slightly better then fair deal, then we should tag Bowe IMO. I think overall we are more stacked on defense, and could handle the loss there better then on offense. Additionally, Carr is probably the 4th or 5th best player on our defense, where as Bowe is our 2nd best offensive player (possibly first if JC doesn't return to form). And lastly, Bowe's franchise number is less then Carr's based on WR vs. CB salaries, so Bowe would be about a million cheaper.

Have to tag Bowe, if you ask me, for a number of reasons. He'll likely be the more difficult player to resign, due to his statistical season last year, the money that is usually given to a player of that position, and the simple fact that he's a bigger name. Carr is a number two corner, will come a bit cheaper, and should be a bit easier to bring back. Additionally, Bowe I think is actually more likely to be replaceable, and will have more trade value, so if we tag him we'd have the flexibility still to send him elsewhere if we feel good about Baldwin/Breaston, sign somebody else in the offseason, or get an offer of enough value. We're also overpaying less by tagging Bowe, I think.

This is why he should be the capomatic man.

Second I agree it should be Bowe. Not only is his number lower which sadly if we lose Carr makes it easier economically to replace him, but he also has the higher trade value if that becomes necessary.

3rd) I think at 11/12 we are in a better position to draft a new CB than a new WR, especially after taking Baldwin last year. The last thing we want to do is become the next lions spending draft pick after draft pick on WRs until one sticks. Plus I think we are slightly deeper at CB. I don't want to see Javy or Brown play as our number 2 if not necessary...but I want that more than seeing Terrence Copper getting a ton of playing time any time we go to 3WR sets. I assuming we've seen the last of him starting now that Haley is gone. At least we can hope.

One thing we also have to consider is who else is available in free agency or the draft who could offer good value as a replacement for either Bowe or Carr.

As for the cap hit for each one, honestly...I don't care about that. We have enough space that we shouldn't be hindered at all this FFMD in regards to that.

At WR, free agency has Colston, Meachem, V. Jackson, D. Jackson, S. Johnson, Reggie Wayne, Wes Welker, Manningham, Lloyd, and a few others. CB has Grimes, Rogers, Finnegan, T. Porter, T. Thomas, and that's probably about it. Only three guys at corner who wouldn't be a dropoff, while there's maybe 4 or 5 WRs who wouldn't be a dropoff. Both positions are pretty deep in the draft, but as someone else said, do we really want to keep drafting receivers?

Well, Copper's last start was the GB game, because Bowe missed a meeting and RAC sat him for the first few plays. Regardless you make a good point.

The one reason to possibly let Bowe go instead of Carr would be that gettign another UFA to replace him would probably be easier. With guys like Colston, Wayne, Jackson's (Desean and Vincent), Stevie Johnson, Brandon Lloyd, Pierre Garcon, Mario Manningham, and a few other decent options vs. CB's like Grimes, Carlos Rodgers, Terrel Thomas, and maybe Tracy Porter. Shear numbers would suggest that not only can we let Bowe walk and have a better shot of replacing him, with only a few CB's available, Carr could command a bigger deal thus forcing us to tag him.

Bowe should get the Franchise tag if we can't get a deal done first. He could recieve higher offers in trade value than Carr. Hopefully though we can sign both of them to decent deals.

To the bolded, you have to understand that some teams with poor depth won't be looking at Carr as solely a #2. They'll want him as their #1 corner. We have to consider that if we don't franchise him, he'll be pursued as such. Look at a team like Carolina or Detroit, for example, who could both use corner help.
