FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Cubs have signed Anthony Rizzo to a seven-year, $41 million extension.
The deal includes two club options and has escalators that could bring the total value to $73 million. It's significantly more than the five-year extension the Diamondbacks gave Paul Goldschmidt this season and buys out all of Rizzo's arbitration years and at least his first year of free agency. Rizzo is now under contract through 2019. The Cubs are attempting to lock him up while he's still undervalued with just over a year of major-league service. |
GREAT deal for the Cubbies. Glad to have him for the long term on a relatively cheap deal. |

Good to have him locked up through his prime. With the 2 team options, he will be a free agent at the age of 32. Fine by me.
Feldman with another really nice start yesterday. I'm fairly confident that it is Villanueva that will be moved to make room for Garza in the rotation. _________________

Prospect Update:
1. Jorge Soler - RF (High A) - .290/.374/.559, 5 HRs, 11.2% BB rate, 15% K rate - Outside of the bat incident, he's been absolutely everything we hoped he would be in his first full season stateside. Stud.
2. (Reserved for Mark Appel)
3. Javier Baez - SS (High A) - .244/.280/.489, 6 HRs, 3.5% BB rate, 29.4% K rate - As good as Soler has been, it's been about the complete opposite for Javy. Dude appears to be flat out refusing to lay off breaking pitches. He gets dropped in the rankings because of it.
4. Albert Almora - CF (A ) - No stats - He's playing games now in Extended Spring Training, while recovering from a broken hamate bone sustained in March, and looks to be about a week or two away from joining Kane County.
5. Arodys Vizcaino - RHP (AA) - No stats - Another player recovering (TJS), Vizcaino has apparently been in Tennessee all year. No word on when he will join a team.
6. Dan Vogelbach - 1B/DH (A) - .288/.366/.448, 5 HRs, 11.7% BB rate, 12.4% K rate - The big things to take away right now are the stellar BB and K rates. The power will come around for Vogy once the weather heats up, as that is the one part of his game that really can't be questioned.
7. Pierce Johnson - RHP (A) - 28.2 IP, 29 H (.344 BABIP), 12 ER, 10 BB, 30 K, 1.21 GO/AO ratio - Johnson had a pretty terrible season debut, but has been really good since. Tons of grounders to go with plenty of Ks and not many BBs. He also has yet to give up a longball.
8. Brett Jackson - OF (AAA) - .259/.341/.432, 2 HRs, 8.7% BB rate, 28.3% K rate - Pretty much more of the same for Jackson. Solid everywhere but that K rate will prevent him from being a regular.
9. Jeimer Candelario - 3B (A) - .229/.352/.331, 1 HR, 16.2% BB rate, 16.2% K rate - The overall line looks very unimpressive, but that BB rate is terrific. The early season reports are also very glowing about his improved D at 3B, to where most think he can stay there longterm.
10. Roni Torreyes - 2B (AA) - .288/.408/.375, 0 HR, 13.6% BB rate, 5.8% K rate - Torreyes is what he is. He's a tiny ballplayer that won't have much power. What he does have is one of the best hit tools in the minor leagues, solid speed and a good glove at 2B. If the improved BB rate is legit, he is definately one to watch.
(Note that Juan Carlos Paniagua would be on this list, but he is still having visa issues in the Dominican and hasn't pitched yet.) _________________

Very glad to have Rizzo locked up along with Castro.
Up next: an extension for Shark. _________________

He'll begin his professional career as a top 25 prospect in the game. I wouldn't put Baez there right now. His start has truly been horrific. _________________

His spring was equally fantastic, though. Looks like one good month or so plus one bad one. _________________

We're talking like 50 spring training PAs versus over 225 PAs at Daytona since last fall where Baez has swung at everything he saw. Even the spring training stats aren't otherworldy. 12 Ks and only 1 BB. Definately worrisome.
But how about Travis Wood? Dude has been killing it so far. No, he's not going to sustain this, but his cutter has been very impressive against right handed hitters. It doesn't miss a ton of bats, but there is rarely ever any solid contact off of it. _________________

That would be interesting. I imagine that would just be a temporary thing. You don't see those six-man rotations sticking around much. _________________
