aka...
Paradox Games
Civilization Games
Total War Games
Games of this ilk
I figured we needed a thread for the Gentlemen to talk about Gentlemanly games. RTS kiddies need not apply.
So how fares the Empires? _________________

animal, I believe it was you who posted an interesting looking strategy game that can be downloaded off the internet. I can't remember the name, want to say something like Europa. I must know the name of this game.
I have Empire: Total War, but my puny laptop cannot run the battles, so I just stick to simulating affairs. My best legacy was Russia, and carpeting Northern Europe. Always fun to see countries get wiped out of existence because of my might.
I delved a little bit into lower Asia, as they were starting stupid stuff with my territories down there. Perhaps I need to boot the game back up so I can burn a great swath and show them who's boss... _________________
Healthy Gates >>>> Anyone to play the TE/WR position, ever.
|

Europa Universalis III, the Grand Strategy of Grand Strategy games.
Here was my latest conquest...
Teutonic Order => Prussia
I played it as if the Teutons beat the Polish-Lith beast (instead of losing like they did IRL). Decided to become the new Russia since the Russian Minors crumbled underneath the authority of the Golden Horde.
I actually picked up the Empire pack during the Steam Sale that included Napoleon as well. Havent played it yet since I was on a Mass Effect binge for the last couple of weeks. I like the TW games, but often times I bored by how .... simple the non-battle aspect of the game is. My opinion is heavy influenced by EUIII though. _________________

No joke, when I play EUIII, I always make a cup of tea and throw on a top hat and monocle. How can you not feel gentlemanly as you secretly fund Patriot and Religious uprising in rival countries, or building Centers of Trade next to rivals to cut the worth of theirs ten fold or declare war on small countries in order to drag larger, unstable countries in large conflicts for the sole purpose of making them crumble underneath war exhaustion and the resulting internal conflicts.
I do say. _________________

| Is EUIII free? Sometimes they make older games free so you buy the new ones, idk if this is the case. How much is it though if it isn't? |

I'd like to know the same thing. And if it is free, where can I get it? _________________

Played Shogun Total War, fun game. Dominated Japan eventually, not on high difficulty though. _________________

I recently had my first experience with this type of game when I played Rome: Total War. Awesome game.
Medieval 2: Total War is sitting on my desk and Total War: Shogun 2 is on its way.
One day I will have to try a Civilization game. IV is regarded as better than V, yes? _________________

Steam has a demo, not sure if theres one anywhere else.
If you do get the game or demo, heres a pretty good picto-rial
(The actual tutorial with the game is terrible)
The actual game booklet is 300 or so pages. Trust me, forums, and trail and error are the best way to learn the game. _________________

Medieval Total War 2 is great, there are a lot of tricks you need to learn though, like having your taxes too low will give your leaders the "poor taxmen" trait which sucks. Also you get Pagan Magician from having them in a territory that isn't their religion for too long. If you go on a crusade you have to have the army attack the city you can't move them manually or you will get deserter. Also Crusader armies cost no maintenance so if your army goes to big to upkeep try to send them on a crusade. You can make your princesses, spies, assassins better by completing missions successfully. The mongol invasion always goes straight for Antioch, so defend it well (had some pretty epic battles there). In real time battles always use your cavalry to flank them and they will usually start to rout.
I've played both Civ 4 and 5. They are both about the same. They have been steadily patching 5 though and I like it more. If your computer isn't good go with Civ 4 though, or 5 will be slow towards the end of the game. |

Checking in with my Burgandy game (AKA the BETTER France)
Currently Lorraine, Haitnaut, Trier, Liege, Baden, Muenster, Normandy are my vassals
Bohemia, Brittany, Guyenne and Champagne are my allies
Conquered Liege, Brabant, Luxeburg because I got the missions (and free cores). Also conquered Bar since I had a core on it.
I have fought France 3 times.
The first time was because France got overconfident. Fresh off taking Britians continental holding, they moved in on Savoy. This drug Boheima and Brittany into the war. This gave me the Alliance CB, which I promptly used to DoW on France. I waited until their 15K doomstacks (plus god tier generals) were on seperate sides of the map, then I combined my 12K stacks into a 30K plus monster and crushed their armies individually.
The War ended with Champagne and Normandy gaining independence, and France withdrew their cores from my entire country.
The Second War was because France stupidly attacked my ally Champange. My vassels and Boheima just engulfed them as my armies chased their doomstacks down. Took Alacon and Bourbon in the end.
The last War was French desperation. A conflict with Aragon drug Boheima and Brittany again into a war with them. Alliance DoW came next. This time my armies just crushed theirs. Took Berry, and forced France to release Guyenne into sovereignty.
France now has no vassals, and is about to get gobbled up by Savoy and Aragon.
My next step is to Diplo-Annex Haitnaut (have mission and free core) and eventually Diplo-Annex Normandy. Hopefully I can eventually gain cores on Lorraine, and Annex them. I really want to avoid that Unlawful Imperial Territory crap.
Oh yeah, largest income in the game already. _________________
