I can't remember where I heard it but we had the 4th youngest team going into training camp behind Kansas City, Cincinnati and Cleveland.
Thats probably changed by now but I'm looking forward toward a franchise built from the ground. Hopefully we can becpme young for better and not worse. _________________

Reminds me of the Packers circa 2006 - 2007. That was there big claim back then, rebuilding after Mike Sherman collected old vets who became worthless. Same deal with Childress when he was the HC, take the average/median age of his 2009 and 2010 teams and I would imagine there being a dramatic age difference from then to now. Rebuilding was needed and I would say MN has done a good job so far since Spielman really took control of the front office. |

The Minnesota Vikings were going to be one of the NFL's youngest teams no matter what happened in Friday's roster reduction to 53 players.
The decisions to release quarterback Sage Rosenfels, cornerback Chris Carr and safety Eric Frampton only accelerated the youth movement.
They cut Rosenfels, 34, in favor McLeod Bethel-Thompson, whose strong arm apparently outweighed Rosenfels' leadership and partially guaranteed contract.
They cut Carr, 29, in favor of Brandon Burton and Marcus Sherels, with the hopes rookie third-round draft pick Josh Robinson can play immediately.
They cut Frampton, 28, in favor of Andrew Sendejo, who impressed before his ankle injury and might have a chance to contribute on defense as Frampton never could.
In all three cases, the deciding factor was keeping younger players with more upside.
Those cuts, along with that of a fourth vested veteran -- end Jeff Charleston, 29 -- left the Vikings with 40 players (75.5%) ages 27 or younger.
They were in the process of acquiring another, cornerback A.J. Jefferson, in a trade with Arizona that hadn't been announced as of late Friday night.
Of the 20 players the Vikings have drafted over the past two seasons, 16 are on the roster, with two more on injured reserve. The only rookie draft pick who didn't make the cut, defensive tackle Trevor Guyton, likely will return on the practice squad if he clears waivers.

I read somewhere that since 2007 or 2008 the Vikings lead the league in drafted players still on their roster. That can be taken as good and bad depending how they turn out. |

It can be bad in the sense that the roster is so depleted that the rookie draft picks have no choice but to make the roster. The more you are in the development of a team, the less likely rookies will make the team. A young rebuilding team will always have open spots for its draft class. |

Also it could be that management just doesnt want to cut bait when the tough get going. Hopefully its not this one! _________________

Yep, from the 2010 draft class.
2. Chris Cook
2. Toby Gerhart
4. Everson Griffen
5. Chris DeGeare
5. Nate Triplett
6. Joe Webb
7. Mickey Shuler
7. Ryan D'Imperio
I think many, including myself, were screaming for more long-term Olineman to start developing as replacements for LT, LG and RG. Instead Childress/Spielman used its 2nd and 3rd round picks on a backup RB. Very questionable move given the current state of the team. Gerhart is an emerging player, but no backup to Adrian Peterson is worth a 2nd and 3rd round pick.
Looking at this draft, and the 2009 draft, its easy to see why the Vikes were so void of talent in 2011 and somewhat now.

Of the 53 players the Vikings currently have on their active roster after Friday’s cuts, eight are rookies with 16 more entering either their second or third seasons in the NFL. Defensive tackle Trevor Guyton was the only player from this year’s 10-man draft class to be waived. Guyton, however, seems to be a prime candidate to be added to the practice squad.
Of the 10 players the Vikings drafted in 2011, nine are still around. The only one missing is Ross Homan, a sixth-round pick who was cut before last season.

You can tell Speilman is in charge. Cutting Sage and Chris Carr were definitely not Leslie moves. _________________ From the fool’s gold mouthpiece the hollow horn,

To say the Vikings are young is an understatement. Spielman is forging the franchise in his image. Unfortunately, that may be a double-edged sword in the world of NFL reality. Tampa Bay head coach Raheem Morris was heading into the 2011 season after being named Coach of the Year by many award-giving organizations. Five months later he was fired. That’s how the NFL works. Winning isn’t everything. It’s the only thing.
Spielman’s youth movement is a process. The Vikings need to make significant improvement this season, but for the overall plan to succeed it needs to have time … which is something Spielman may not have.

I dont get this article. They mentioned Morris, who is a head coach. And then they go on to say that Spielman may not have time, because of the concept of winning now. Spielman just got promoted to GM, he isnt going anywhere only one year after the promotion. If there was any indication that Spielman's job was on the line, Wilf probably would have waited some time to promote him to GM, or create the position for someone else. Is the article confusing Frazier for Spielman? Frazier is the one who should be more concerned for his job. |
