i remember rodney harrison sayin somethin last weekend about Red Rifle's arm strength being an issue.
he's got some zip on his short/lower-intermediate throws, but doesn't have the arm to make all the throws, imo.
but...i think he has in it him to continue developing his arm.
what say you? _________________ nfl: bengals

I agree. He has great arm strength for the throws we are asking him. If you notice when he throws the deep ball, AJ usually has to make a good adjustment to catch it. He doesnt hit him in stride down the sideline like you would like him too. But he can make the seam throw 15-20 down the field and the deep out. Just not the big arm, but that is okay.

It is. The player needs to know their limitation. The guys with lesser arm strength need to make their reads faster and get the ball out quicker. Drew Brees does that well.
It's the same with the deep ball. Get it out quickly and it will look much better.
His arm strength isn't an issue. As the game slows down for him, no one will mention it ever again. _________________

i really don't worry about dalton's deep ball. it's rusty now, and a work in progress, but i don't think deep ball's are even directly related to arm strength really.
it's the 20-30 yard outs and curls, etc on the other side of the field that limit dalton. not a big deal, since there aren't too many qb's that make that throw consistently anyways. _________________ nfl: bengals

Arm strength is overated, IF the offensive coordinator designs routes that fit the abilities of the QB.
Gruden fits the scheme to player abilities. No reason to worry about arm strength or Rodney harrison. _________________

| The deep ball looks more like a accuracy issue than arm strength imo, hopefully more of a mechanical thing than anything else. I might be wrong but I thought Andy's Intermediate throws had good speed on them especially the long third downs in the last three weeks. |

Agree with this.
How many times in the NFL nowadays do you see a pass interference flag get dropped because balls are sligthly underthrown. Its easier for receivers to adjust back to the ball than the DB.
Dalton will develop his arm 'strength', but lets not forget that Joe Montana had 'poor arm strength'. Andy can throw every ball needed in the modern NFL from what I've seen this far.
He fits Grudens' system perfectly. _________________ " I imagine that in Paul McCartneys' house, he must have a shelf with the 12+ great 'Beatles' studio albums neatly stacked. At times, he must rock back in a chair, light a cigar and say to himself, '....not bad for a life's work......' " |

BTW, Dalton threw three great deep balls yesterday, on the money. Two to Simpson, one to Caldwell, all in stride. _________________

Arm strength is VERY important, but it's more than just being able to throw far or throw rocket passes.
For example, a guy like ROthlisberger or Peyton Manning can have guys draped over their legs and not be able to step into a throw at all, but still be able to fire the ball 20-30 yards down field to a WR. Dalton can not do that, neither can our guy Mccoy.
It's not all that often that the QB gets to take a nice full stride into a pass. It is a very nice skill for a QB to be able to still fire strong passes when they have to double clutch, pass while falling backwards, or pass while guys are hanging on them.
Is it necessary??? no. But it's a nice competitive advantage to have that ability. _________________ NEW 2011 draft prediction.

I see being able to feel pressure more important than being able to throw with a guy hanging on you. Manning goes downright away if a guy gets on him but he was very good at moving away from the pressure. The white mamba is very good at both. |
