Not unless there was only one number left among the allowed numbers. I know each position has certain numbers in which they can choose and those numbers were expanded recently, but only for receivers I believe. Keyshaun Johnson was the pioneer of the teens for receivers because there were no 80's left in New York at the time due to current players and retired numbers.
I actually wish that players were free to choose whatever free number they want, like in college. But, I'm sure there is a decent enough reason for the structure. _________________

Actually, there was some numbers available. Keyshawn was granted an exception though, and he had to pay fines to be able to use the number.

As far as I know, a big part of the reasoning is for eligible receivers and stuff like that. Rather than remembering if a player is eligible to be downfield or not, based on where he was originally lined up, the officials can just look at the numbers.
NCAA has some of the same rules too, ineligible receivers on offense have to wear numbers 50-79, and there's a couple other rules too. Because roster sizes are bigger and oft times have a lot of players at one position in comparison to others, they can't have specific rules for all players based on positions, otherwise those numbers would fill up fast. _________________

When you're making millions a year, sending some money to charities isn't a big deal. He probably would have sent that money to a charity anyway. _________________
