NFL Draft: Round One

Team Needs [QB, DT, WR/TE, OG, CB, DE]
Selection: Blaine Gabbert - Quarterback - Missouri

Selkies wrote:
Panthers fans close your eyes.

I said I wouldn't do it. I said I wanted no part in this Blaine Gabbert hype but I think the first step is admitting and I have a big problem with Blaine Gabbert. I've made it no secret that I'm not a fan of Gabbert's but he's winning everyone else over but me, even Ron Rivera.

Previously, I had Cam Newton, Marcell Dareus and Nick Fairley here but a lot has changed since the end of the college football season. For one, Andrew Luck seemingly decided that despite being the consensus "top pick" that he would return for his final year at Stanford before receiving his degree causing a hectic stir in the mock draft community. For months now we've all been trying to find some clarity to the first pick and I believe we've got it, even if I don't want to accept it.

Blaine Gabbert is Carolina's best option. I don't like it, I'm sure I'm not the only one but I can certainly see why Gabbert is now considered just that. I've always stood behind my opinion on Gabbert as a mediocre prospect, in fact I've even said something along the likes of "he's a hybrid clone of Rex Grossman's pocket presence with Sam Bradford's stature and measurables." Well, I'm still going to stand behind that. Gabbert isn't nearly as impressive as everyone in the media is leading you to believe.

Yeah, sure he seemingly has a great head for the game and has passed through the eye test at the Combine but that doesn't change the fact that when the pocket breaks down, he makes like a chubby little penguin and gets "happy feet." This isn't a make-or-break tendency with quarterbacks but it certainly hinders a lot of quarterbacks. I sense fear in Gabbert's game, something an NFL quarterback shouldn't have. But the writing is on the wall, Gabbert is being compared to Matt Ryan and if you really believe that, then I guess you've already fallen for the "ESPN Hype Machine."

Gabbert looks like Matt Ryan and they had similar numbers in college but that's about where it ends. Ryan took over games and led his team to victories, even with less talent than Gabbert had at his tenure in Missouri. Gabbert hasn't won much of anything but he has the look of a franchise quarterback and a winner. Something I greatly underestimated in the process of evaluating Jimmy Clausen as a starting quarterback.

At this point, it comes down to this: does Carolina really want to see another year of their disastrous quarterback play and have it blow up in their face for the second straight year? I would think not. Ron Rivera is a smart coach and it would be wise to give this franchise some direction and certainty, whether Gabbert elevates his game in the pros is yet to be seen but he's a breath of fresh air come September when you consider the fact that Carolina is talking about Billy Volek or Jimmy Clausen as their 2011-12 starter. I'm ready to say that Gabbert is the pick for Carolina and I'm confident that they will pass on Cam Newton for the very same reason I brought up why Clausen isn't a good option; he's simply draining the mentality and morale of the Panthers. Newton could do the same.

Team Needs [DT, DE, CB, RT, S, ILB, TE]
Selection: Marcell Dareus - Defensive Tackle - Alabama

Selkies wrote:
If there's one pick that seems to be set in stone, it's this one.

Denver's defensive line of 2010 had no business collecting a paycheck as a starting unit. On tape, you see the worst defensive line in all of football and it's almost a shock that they won as many games as they did. That said, I feel it's high time for the Broncos to upgrade.

While a lot of "draftniks" are considering Da'Quan Bowers as the right pick for Denver, I don't see it. I won't deny Denver's need at defensive end. I'm not blind and I'm certainly not short-sighted, Robert Ayers has never been impressive and Elvis Dumervil was nothing more than a rotational player in the 4-3 prior to Denver's switch to the 3-4. With that in mind, I still can't give them Bowers. His knee scares me and I'm sure it's scaring a handful of other teams and while I might be the biggest supporter of Robert Quinn around these parts, you can't justify taking a player that high when they are coming off a season in which they did not play, in addition to having a tumor in his head. Maybe it's too soon but with Darrent Williams' tragedy finally coming to pass and Gaines Adams still in the back of my mind, I can't see Denver taking a big risk on Quinn.

Bringing in Marcell Dareus would give them an every-down player with a lot of versatility. Dareus played a lot of nose guard/tackle at Alabama and it wouldn't come as a surprise if John Fox wanted to utilize him at that spot in Denver. Dareus has the looks of a star but he hasn't put it all together just yet but I believe he will -- in time.

Team Needs[3-4 DE/NT, OLB, OT, ILB, QB, CB]
Selection: Cam Newton - Quarterback - Auburn
Selkies wrote:
If there is one team that can afford to take a risk on Cam Newton, it's Buffalo.

Buffalo has floundered in mediocrity for the past fifteen years and with their biggest highlight of their franchise coming in the form of being knocked out by Tennessee back in '99 on a crazy special teams play, this team needs to get things in the right direction.

Even though Ryan Fitzpatrick has shown to be more than capable for your fantasy team, he isn't going to be leading Buffalo into the Super Bowl, let alone the playoffs anytime soon. At least, I don't think so and maybe Cam Newton doesn't really have this "unlimited potential" like everyone in scouting circles seem to believe but he would certainly inject life and excitement in a rather dull and bland Buffalo Bills football team.

Lately, Buffalo likes to take the best player available -- or at least, the player who has the highest upside. Cam Newton is arguably that player in this class and with Chan Gailey and company taking Newton and Gabbert out to eat and working them out (not to mention pumping them up to the media), I think it's safe to say they're targeting taking one of the talented (yet overrated) signal-callers.

Bringing Newton in would make for quite the future for Buffalo with C.J. Spiller and Steve Johnson and potentially give Buffalo their most dynamic offensive unit since the Jim Kelly/Thurman Thomas/Andre Reed days. I hate to sound like everyone else but can you imagine if Newton and Spiller pan out? That would one scary duo to defend against.

Team Needs[RT, S, CB, RG, NT, 3-4DE, RB]
Selection: Patrick Peterson - Cornerback - LSU
Selkies wrote:
Jerry Jones is never afraid to make a bold move, especially with his draft picks and with a game-changer like Patrick Peterson on the board, I fully expect for Jerry Jones to put the ol'e full-court press to bring Peterson on board in Dallas.

Despite Jones' recent comments instilling confidence in his secondary, this team needs a serious upgrade. Although, I'm not about to call Mike Jenkins or Orlando Scandrick a slouch, I just don't feel either one of them are capable of covering DeSean Jackson or Hakeem Nicks. They need one more defensive playmaker to really put them over the top and with the embarrassment that fell upon Dallas last season, I think Jerry will do whatever he has to in order to ensure that this team won't be picking in the top-10 next year.

I don't have to tell you about Peterson. He's a freakish athlete and player who should be in consideration for rookie of the year in his first professional season, especially on a team as talented as Dallas'.

It would be a little unwise to trade this much in order to obtain one player but I think it's high time they start really putting their money where their mouth is. Peterson would bring back those dear moments to Dallas fans of Deion Sanders picking off quarterbacks and returning it to the house. After all, what price do you put on being a Super Bowl-caliber team? Jerry Jones would tell you there isn't one.

Team Needs [OLB, CB, OL, TE, WR depth]
Selection: Von Miller - 3-4 Outside Linebacker - Texas A&M
Selkies wrote:
Not to insult the organization or the fans but Arizona arguably had the worst situation at quarterback of any team in the NFL. They looked foolish trotting John Skelton, Derek Anderson and Max Hall out there as starters and I'm surprised Larry Fitzgerald didn't take it personally as a direct insult. But what can you say about the guy that hasn't been said already? He's a class-act and he still produced.

That said, I'm not sold on the fact that Ken Whisenhunt will turn to a rookie quarterback again and insult his star-receiver further. I anticipate Arizona to acquire a veteran stop-gap like Baltimore's Marc Bulger and take the best available player on defense. With Joey Porter and Clark Haggans potentially leaving in free agency and O'Brien Schofield's health in question, they certainly could take pre-draft stud Von Miller.

The biggest concern I have with Miller is where he fits. I've heard some say that he could end up playing a similar role to that of Lawrence Timmons or he could end up being a feared pass rusher in a 3-4 defense like Elvis Dumervil. Either way, Arizona could use all the help they can get.

Personally, I feel like Miller's best fit is in a 4-3 defense where he would be asked to play weakside linebacker given his incredible coverage ability and tendency to swarm to the ball, I think Miller could still do well in a 3-4, even pass expectations of his draft slot. Now, a lot of "experts" will tell you that Von Miller is a "can't miss prospect," I don't feel that way, in fact he worries me a bit but not enough for Arizona to pass on him. They simply need all the help they can get on the defensive side of the ball.

Team Needs [WR, OLB, RT, DE, CB, DT]
Selection: A.J. Green - Wide Receiver - Georgia
Selkies wrote:
Mike Holmgren is apparently sending out signals that he will be shopping the sixth pick in the draft but what I don't think he realizes is that he Cleveland is in prime position to grab one of Nick Fairley, Robert Quinn or A.J. Green and significantly impact this team in a big way.

Now, I can certainly see why "Big Mike" wants to trade out. With Ryan Kerrigan, Gabe Carimi and Julio Jones floating around in the mid-first round, if they could stock-pile some picks and land two of those players, it would be huge but adding a player like A.J. Green for a developing quarterback like Colt McCoy would do this franchise wonders. I don't think I have to mention who their top receiving threat was last season.

I can't remember the last time Cleveland had the pieces in place that they do. They seemingly have a starting quarterback, two relatively young and productive running backs and an All-Pro left side of their offensive line. The pieces are in place for this team to really take off offensively but they need one more thing, a legitimate number-one receiver. A.J. Green is exactly that and may in fact be the best receiver to come into the draft since Randy Moss or Keyshawn Johnson.

By picking a receiver, it allows Cleveland to open up and go defense the rest of the way (unless a right tackle prospect falls). This is going to be a huge draft for Cleveland as they could certainly fill a lot of needs with this year's crop of talent.

[-#7-]

Team Needs [QB, 3-4 OLB, CB, WR, 3-4 NT, OL depth]
Selection: Robert Quinn - 3-4 Outside Linebacker - North Carolina
Selkies wrote:
irst of all, let me say I love the move to bring Jim Harbaugh into San Francisco to get this team headed back on the right track and while I am a little concerned by his comments about Alex Smith being his starter week one. I can certainly see why he says that when you consider this year's crop of quarterbacks, at least in the pretense that he doesn't want to get the fans all stirred up to take a quarterback here at number-seven overall.

That and he is Jim Harbaugh. I don't doubt the guy knows how to coach quarterbacks for a second. There has to be some reason San Francisco took Alex Smith number-one overall, but I digress.

With the impending lockout and Manny Lawson due for a new contract, I think it would be wise for the 49ers to load up and find a replacement and at this stage, Quinn would be ideal. Personally, I can't mock Quinn falling any further than this and if it weren't for Da'Quan Bowers suddenly showing up, Quinn would easily be a top-two pick.

The ringing possibility here is that San Francisco may consider moving back to the 4-3 in a couple of years after Aubrayo Franklin and Justin Smith start to decline, it would be wise to pony up grab the best pass rusher available that can play in both the 4-3 and the 3-4, so essentially Da'Quan Bowers and Robert Quinn are ideal fits, in my opinion. Don't be shocked if come draft day some team pays a heavy price to trade up and grab Quinn early though. I get the feeling that teams are a little antsy to get a guy this talented, this late.

I would prefer Aldon Smith at 17 and Hankerson at 79 for the Patriots, but other than that I am pretty pleased with this draft.

I thought about slotting in Aldon Smith but instead I opted to take the route of the "wait and see" approach with a pass rusher. If worst came to worse, next year with Donte Paige-Moss, Zach Brown and a handful of other good pass rushers available, I think they would hold off. Obviously, I felt the need to address the position anyway with Martez Wilson, who may or may not fit your scheme but he certainly does fit the mold of the type of players you guys draft; and even took out an insurance policy on Wilson -- just in case he busts, with Ricky Elmore, though, I'm going to strongly consider changing that pick since I don't see the real need of double-dipping there. Kind of one of my slip-ups in this, if you will.

As for Dwayne Harris, he just seems like a Belichick kind of player. To be quite honest, he's my shot-in-the-dark prospect who I feel will go a lot higher than some people believe. As you can see, my draft board is very different from most others.

Note! : I noticed I left Colin Kaepernick out. I'm really tired but I will get to this as soon as I can. I don't hold a very high opinion on Kaepernick but I think I can find a fit for him in rounds three or four.

Trading away a lot of picks for Prince doesn't make that much sense IMO. Without trading Kolb that would leave us with not enough picks to fill other holes.

NFL Draft: Round One

Team Needs [WR, OG, DL, OLB, CB depth, RB depth]
Selection: Julio Jones - Wide Receiver - Alabama

I like all of the Lions picks, but this one is a little "off" for me. Our team pretty much lives by the BPA and Julio is without a doubt the BPA. Yes we could go Houston, but he seems like a bit of a reach, and fills a lesser need. If we got Julio here, I would be so, so, so, so, so, so, so happy. Also, if we get Julio here, we'd have to change our 5th (Cecil Shorts), if you change that pick, we'd draft the best power runner.

P.S. We don't have a 6th (but the comp pick are being announced today, so we may get one Pray )

Where's the value for the Pats trading 28 to Miami for 79 and 2012 2nd and 4th?
We got this year's 33 for last years 89. The idea is to move up not back when trading for futures.
Instead of Tyrone Smith, Wilkerson and Hudson, how about Aldon Smith (17), Carimi or Wilkerson @ (28), Danny Watson or Mike Pouncey(33) and Deandre McDaniel or Davon House at (60) (I dont think House will be around).
I'll pass on Martez Wilson at 74 and look for a RB or WR ( I think Hankerson will be long gone by 74) but I'd rather have a Niles Paul than a Dwayne Harris.

That was a very disappointing draft for the Ravens.

In the 1st I would hate Liuget if Gabe Carimi and Jimmy Smith are still on the board.

Titus Young in the 2nd is the perfect pick although Martez Wilson would be a strong possibility at that point. He probably slips further than he should as a lot of people have him as a late 1st to early 2nd rounder.

I think there is better value than Deunta Williams in the 3rd. If we are going safety then Quinton Carter is better value but I think Dontay Moch would be a good pick in the 3rd as pass rush is the biggest need on the team outside of OT.

I would then take Jake Kirpatrick in the 4th as we need to get a future C now.

The Ravens should have the Rams 6th round pick and the Rams should have the Ravens 7th round pick from the Mark Clayton trade.

I would then look at BPA at safety, RB and D-Line depth with the Ravens final 3 picks.
