ASAP Rocky
| Quote: | | Rakim Mayers (born 1988), better known by his stage name ASAP Rocky (often stylized A$AP Rocky), is an American rapper. Born and raised in Harlem, he released the mixtape LiveLoveA$AP in 2011. On December 5, 2011, the BBC announced that he had been nominated for the BBC's Sound of 2012 poll.[1] |
ASAP Rocky(no he's not taking his name from Aesop Rock, his crew is the ASAP crew and his rap name is actually rocky, it's also pronounced like as soon as possible). Anyway, he broke onto the scene this year when he released videos for Purple Swag and Peso and the internet ate them up. He then released his free project "LiveLoveASAP" last month and the internet ate it up, as did critics, it's a good tape. He raps with a slow drawl over great, spaced out and ambient beats. His music is influenced by Houston and New York styles. He raps pretty much all about a few topics, himself, weed, lean, etc but hey, the atmosphere he creates and the beats he raps over are great. People may complain that his lyrics suck but don't put yourself in a corner musically and give this guy a shot, you may like it.

Peso was pretty dope. Reminded me of some early Wiz. Out of this world and Trilla were sick too. _________________

Good news, everyone!
Thrillhouse presents a Thrillhouse Joint: A Tasteful Introduction to Conor Oberst
Genre: Singer-Songwriter, Folk, Bright Eyes Solo-core, Lisp-core
Ultra-king Cuts:
Moab
Lenders in the Temple
Discography:
Conor Oberst
Outer South
| Thrillhouse wrote: | | What, you think this is cheating? Well, sit on it, Potsie! You know Conor Oberst. You either love him or you hate him. Or are indifferent to him. I guess that’s possible. Anyway, Outer South is kind of like half of an album, where half of it is garbage. But his solo album is straight brilliant, I think. Moab is my favorite solo Oberst song and it’s one of the top 5 things I’ve ever heard him involved with, period. It’s a bit different sounding than Bright Eyes, but lyrically, his self-titled is pretty damn strong. |
Have a kingly day, everyone! _________________

| My bad for issuing this updat for a while, I'll have to add it to the index later though cause I'm posting from my itouch. Obviously I'm a big Oberst fan, but I know more about Bright Eyes than the solo work. That being said, one song that I do particularly like off his self titled release that comes to mind is Cape Canaveral |

Jetsqb and PML present an introduction to:
The Gaslight Anthem
Genre: Rock
Discography:
Sink or Swim
The '59 Sound
American Slang
Best Songs by The Gaslight Anthem:
Great Expectations
The '59 Sound
High Lonesome
Film Noir
The Patient Ferris Wheel
Miles Davis & the Cool
| Packman Luke's thoughts wrote: | | I'm a bit surprised it took me this long to suggest The Gaslight Anthem in this thread. It's my opinion that they've really only put out one great album, that being The '59 Sound, but even if their other efforts aren't exactly hits, they still have an absolute homerun. I had a hard time picking just 6 songs to link off the album, because in some way I found justification for every single track. The mixture of their American rock sound and the endless allusions works perfectly, and adds a feeling of depth to the album that really puts it into an upper tier for me. |
| Jetsqb101 wrote: | | This band was a bit odd for me, because I don't know The Gaslight Anthem but I do know the lead singer's side project, The Horrible Crowes. I didn't realize this until I heard the voice and now I'm actually pretty excited to go into the rest of the discography because I love Elsie. I listened to the '59 sound and was enjoying it a lot, it's more upbeat and less folky than the side project but his voice still carries the song,he's got a nice narrative quality that I really enjoy. Yay for coincidences(and after today, distractions) |

I love The Gaslight Anthem. They wear their influences on their sleeves (especially Springsteen, Dylan, and Strummer) without sounding like a derivative. I think you might be selling Sink or Swim a little bit short though. It is IMO an outstanding record. It's not as solid as The 59 Sound but the highs might be higher and the lows are still very good. "Red at Night", "I'da Called You Woody, Joe" and "We're Getting A Divorce" are as good as anything they've done. _________________

Yeah, I guess I can see that. I probably never really gave it a fair chance. I listened to it after American Slang, so I might have carried in an expectation of being disappointed. _________________

At Glastonbury festival in '09 all my mates were torn whether to see Dizzee Rascal or Pete Doherty. Because I didn't want to see either I got my little booklet out saw who was on the John Peel stage and decided to go see the Gaslight Anthem thinking 'who the hell are they?'. But they were amazing, Springsteen joined them for the 59 sound and they were just awesome.
Since then they've probably been my second favourite band and I don't think there's one song of theirs I dislike. 3 completely golden albums but I think sink or swim is my favourite, 'We're getting a divorce you keep the diner' kicks arse. They just have good songs Fallon's lyrics are almost cinematic in the way they just grab you into the song and his voice is unreal. My mate who's a drummer says Horrowitz is awesome and Rosamillia's guitar is awesome.
Just an awesome band. _________________
