I just got gimp last night. I'm trying to cut out this picture of the hokie bird but the background is still white. I've done exactly what the youtube video did. What am I doing wrong?

when you cut it out u have to save it as a png file _________________

I just tried that. Still the same.
I noticed when I was cutting it out that the background stayed white, instead of the checkered background in the video I was following. |
