With the Titans between $27 and $28 million over the cap, Titans General Manager Floyd Reese announced this afternoon that DE Kevin Carter, WR Derrick Mason, CB Samari Rolle, K Joe Nedney, FB Robert Holcombe and T Fred Miller will be cut tomorrow. The move will put the Titans 80% towards meeting the cap this season, $8 million under the cap by 2006 and between $50-$70 under by 2007. The Titans have already restructured a number of players to make the remaining 20% needed to meet the March 1 cap deadline. The Titans announced they will tender all restricted free agents all their exclusive rights free agents this season.

Reese explained that the Titans restructured a number of contracts during '99 and 2000 seasons in order to keep the team's window of opportunity open longer for another Super Bowl. He also said the Titans wanted to produce a winner for their new fans after the move to Tennessee. Reese pointed to the cap and parity as being a way of life in the NFL and that it was impossible to continue along the path the Titans had taken the past few seasons by restructuring contracts. The Ravens were used as an example of a team who cut 10 starters yet were competitive just a year later.

Reese said the Titans will focus on drafting well and coaching their talent. He said it would not impact his choice for pick #6 in the upcoming draft and would still trade out of the position if talent was not available whent the Titans pick. He also mentioned that QB Steve McNair was aware of the cuts and understood the team's financial situation. Coach Fisher did not rule out that one or two of the players cut may return.

Didn't think it would happen all at once. Dam, well we certainly are going to have a young team, and DB has to be the top defensive priority rather than LB now. I think that takes D.J. off the radar and puts Antrel Rolle into serious consideration, along with a top WR. Wow, this is going to be really interesting, I have confidence that we will make good choices.

I might be wrong, but I think that's the same as a restricted FA.

I'm bummed about the cuts, but now we know. IMO- why would we NEED to draft a specific position at #6? I mean one of the ones cut CB, DT,WR to get to the point. Hell if Benson is the real deal, draft him at #6. I'm not saying I want him or he is a need or the one piece we need. If ARolle is the [inappropriate/removed], draft him or whomever. Now more than ever there are MORE options at #6.

Why is DJ all the sudden out of the picture? Just because we cut Rolle. We have Woolfolk(not saying he's anything special)but we could still draft DJ and get a corner like Webster or Mcfadden in the second round.I mean, the Steelers don't have the greatest CB's but look how great their defense was this year. Why?Because they have great linebackers.

I believe that exclusive FA is similar to a draft pick the team has exclusive rights to work a contract out with the player.

A Ristricted FA other teams can offer contrats to the player and the team has the right to match that offer.

The only way a exclusive FA walks is if the team decides not to release him.

Because we now have MUCH bigger needs and they probably wont take a player on just skill anymore. Peter Sirmon is a very good OLB when healthy and would be very out of place in the middle. If DJ were there, i think that the Titans would consider him, but i very highly doubt it that we will take DJ with the 6th pick.
