1. Fewest sacks allowed
2. Punt return average
3. Net punting average
I'm mentioning this for a few reasons. Leading the league in both punt return average and punting average yards is a very positive thing because we are capturing those "hidden yards" that many of us find important. Shorter fields for our offense, longer fields for opposing offenses, and the potential for the Dez Bryant TD could actually be the catalyst for a few wins down the road. We all know how bad it's been over the years when our special teams units were atrocious, and boy did we suffer because of it. If our special teams unit continues to lead the league in hidden yards, it could actually be one of the keys to making the playoffs. Special teams is the most often overlooked aspect of football, but Devin Hester and the Bears special teams unit nearly single-handedly took that team to the Super Bowl a few years ago despite Rex Grossman's erratic QB play.
And I'm going to give credit where credit is due. You all know that I hate Jerry Jones more than anyone else on this forum, but he deserves a lot of praise here. His decision to cut Flozell Adams and replace him with Doug Free is the sole reason why we lead the league in fewest sacks allowed. While we don't have the wins that normally accompany it (see Coaching, Horrific), Free's performance over the first 3 games has been absolutely OUTSTANDING, and he would never have had that chance had it not been for Jerry. If he continues to play as well as he has, especially since he's faced some talented pass rushers already (Brian Orakpo - before he was moved to Barron's side, Julius Peppers, Mario Williams), he'll not only be the key to our success on offense (unless Red Ball's playcalling screw us again), but he may carry the team to the playoffs by himself. The importance of keeping a QB's jersey clean cannot be understated, and he has done the best job in the league thus far.

Doug Free is a boss. It's nice to have a left tackle who actually can do his job without needing to hold on every play or need to attempt to get a fast start because he's too slow to wait until the ball is snapped.
I also hope that if Phillips is fired after the season (should we not be able to turn things around, which I hope isn't the case), that DeCamillis is kept around. He's one of the best special teams coordinators in the game.

Didn't he also say when T.O. was let go, either Austin or Hurd would step up? I recall that he did, anywho...

As long as we're giving credit where credit is due, we should note that Romo's ypa is down almost a full yard from his career average, despite some huge plays in the last game. Before the Houston game it was down yard and a half.
Some of that has to be put on Garrett modifying the offense to protect Romo (perhaps with credit to Romo for adjusting his sights away from the long-developing routes as well, but it would seem to be an overall philosophy more than a few individual choices).
As the offensive line solidified against Houston and provided a solid run game (as well as good pass protection) against a very talented Houston front 7, the game plan (or, again, credit to Romo, who makes a lot more decisions at the line than I think most people realize) the passing game opened up, with 9.9 ypa for the game. |
