Only moderate speed off the edge. Can pressure the tackle's outside shoulder and has an effective spin move back inside. Good leg drive and use of leverage for the bull rush. Able to pressure the quarterback from the weak or strong side, as well as moving inside in passing situations.
Run defense: Good size and strength to stack and shed at the point of attack. Good balance to sprawl away from the cut block. Disciplined defender who understands containment responsibilities. Keeps his head up and quickly locates the ball. Good effort in pursuit laterally and downfield.
Explosion: Good initial quickness off the snap. Lacks elite speed off the edge to get the corner against NFL competition. Moderate straight-line speed with normal acceleration.
Strength: Flashes power, able to use leverage to get under the pads of tackles. Only marginal getting off blocks and will be walled off by double teams.
Tackling: Rarely misses a tackle, secure in his wrap-up and flashes some pop. Good use of hands to disengage from blocks and remain square at the line of scrimmage to make the tackle. Shows good change-of-direction agility, can break down in space and make the open-field tackle. Plants the quarterback if given the chance.
Intangibles: Delayed joining the ECU program due to academics, but emerged as a freshman standout. Athleticism runs in the family. Has four brothers who have either played or are currently playing college football or basketball. |

He is an instinctive player who has shown good edge quickness and speed when rushing the passer. Possesses natural range in pursuit. Displays impressive hand-use toughness. Is highly competitive with a good motor.
Weakness: Wilson only exhibits average lateral agility and doesn't appear comfortable playing in space. Needs to become more consistent with his pad level. At this time, he only possesses a limited pass-rush package. Needs to improve his counter rush moves. |
My Grade: B. I didn't love the pick, but what good is it gonna do you to draft for need in the 7th round? I think Wilson is a great value at the selection and he continues to the fit the need for a stronger pass rush from the defensive line. Whether he contributes this year or not, I think his athleticism and collegiate production along is enough to justify the selection.
General Consensus on the forum: Is there roster room for another DL? Good value here, but why not go for a position of need? _________________ Top 50 Franchise Cornerstones (2012) - COMPLETED!

Eh, ok. This late in the draft, I really don't care who we take. Its a TOTAL crapshoot.
But why not take a flyer on a CB or something of need? _________________

Good value here, he was a round 5 or 6 prospect who had good production; probably an OLB? Looks to be good on the pass rush. _________________

No, he's not an OLB prospect. Not at 290lbs.
In a lot of mocks in 4th and 5th rounds. TT likes his trench men. _________________

Would've rather gotten a CB/KR but not a bad pick in a division that has AD, Forte, and Best, beef up that line and keep em fresh. We'll grab some OLB's and KR's as UDFA's _________________

Good value, but TT does realize that we can only have 3 DL on the field at a time right? Not counting Raji and our starters we have Toribio, Harrell, Wynn, Neal, Wilson and Talley battling for three spots. I feel bad for Jarius Wynn, he looked pretty good last year. _________________

As LOLB, I think they were looking for a guy that can really anchor that outside do give them a different look from Matthews and Jones. I can see this guy and Jones both getting nice # of reps at that spot for different calls and formations. _________________

meh... it doesn't really matter
you know TT is going to weed through a lot of leftovers in UDFA
maybe he can find another tramon williams
also, i think this speaks volumes of how much of an impact they still think pat lee can make... |

Why take a flyer on a CB or something of need if you feel a certain player is a flat out better prospect at a position of strength?
I love what we've done in the trenches this week. |
