Hands: Inconsistent hands, making one-handed catches look easy but dropping catchable balls over the past couple of seasons. Excellent leaping ability to high-point passes. Allows balls into his frame too often instead of snatching the ball with his hands.
Route running: Has improved the quickness of his routes, sinking his hips and getting to the sideline more quickly. Sells out-and-up route well, setting up defenders and getting down the sideline in a hurry. Threatens the seam; will get extra attention from linebackers and safeties down the middle.
After the catch: Fluid runner after the catch. Not really elusive, but has enough shiftiness to freeze and then move past defender when heading inside-out. Lacks elite acceleration to separate, but long strides and length allow him to get yards down the field.
Blocking: Greatly improved in this area during his career. Doesn't get a lot of pop but holds up well against SAM linebackers on the edge to give running backs an inside lane. Also anchors against defensive ends. Goes to second level and negates inside linebackers. Finds targets when in motion; able to latch on and move his feet to sustain. Stronger players can get under his pads and knock him off his feet in space, but he does give effort to help teammates down the field.
Intangibles: Appears to have matured during the past year, but character and maturity questions will require answers. Work ethic has also improved during his career. |

Very athletic for his size with fluid hips and a second gear to stretch the field. Natural pass-catcher who can contort his body to make catches away from his chest and in traffic.
Weakness: Has concerns about work ethic and attention to detail. Struggles to diagnose coverage and shed with his hands. Despite size lacks good strength and slips off a lot of blocks. Takes too many plays off. Does not have the moves needed to be elusive in the open field. |
My Grade: B. I think Quarless is a very solid selection and a player that could turn out to be a great all-around tight end. He's had some off the field issues which could be a mark against this pick, but he a very talented player who can separate and stretch the field. If he's willing to put in the work, Quarless and Finley could be a great combination in the future.
General Consensus on the forum: There's a lot of discussion about his numerous off-field issues, but with a sturdy locker room, we're just excited to potentially have a pair of dynamic pass-catchers at tight end. We realize there's work to be done with him, but the upside in Quarless is enough to justify the selection despite already having 3 solid tight ends on the roster. _________________ Top 50 Franchise Cornerstones (2012) - COMPLETED!

I'm a big fan of this pick. I can't wait to read the hysteria on JSonline! _________________

Needed TE depth with Lee regressing big time. Hope he can block though. _________________

We likely wouldn't know, Palmy couldn't talk about Penn State guys, but I'm sure he can give us a great low down in a day or two. _________________

AQ is a really good receiving tight end and should really add a lot behind J-Mike. _________________
