June 30, New Jersey

It's time to start gearing up for the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.

The Central Scouting Bureau released their rankings recently and the Draft Lottery is Monday. For the first time in league history, the winner of the lottery moves up to #1 overall, whereas in previous years the lottery winner could move up no more than four spots. The odds remain the same; the worst team gets a 25% chance of being selected. As of now, the Florida Panthers are the only team guaranteed a >10% chance of winning the lottery. (4th team has a 10.7% chance and it ascends from there until the 25%)

Here are the top 30 North American skaters according to Central Scouting Bureau:

If you want to get familiar with some of the top prospects, I recommend NHL.com's player profiles. You can find them here: http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/console?catid=635&id=241832&navid=nhl:topheads

I'm going to try to do a mock draft when the official order is revealed, then one at the end of May, then two or so in the month of June leading up to the draft.

Until then, here are the teams interested in the lottery.

I'd love Rasmus Ristolainen for the Flyers if Nurse and Jones aren't available whenever we pick.

I see your thought but he is not even in the top 30, I see them targeting Pulock or Zadorov more than Ristolainen. Pulock has a wicked shot and Zadorov has the potential to be a #1 d-man.

It's a horrible time not to be in it. This is going to be a pretty good draft.

Too bad Pittsburgh's first pick is like, 100 Laughing

He's the number four ranked European skater, top defenseman.

He's probably only behind Jones and Nurse.

You don't think he's in the top 30?

We need a good puck moving defenseman, that's Ristolainen.

That being said, assuming Nurse is gone, I'd be completely fine with Pulock as well.

Umm...you're on crack, he's easily a top 10 player in this draft. The reason he isn't in the top 30 is because that's a list of all the North American skaters. Ristolainen is Finnish.

Ristolainen would be a great addition for the Flyers because he's a big puck moving defenseman. Since we're all but out of the Seth Jones sweepstakes I would love to add him. That said he is very young (17-18-19 I think?) so he might be a year out of playing for the Flyers unless he comes in and tears up training camp like Couts did.

Pulock reminds me a lot of Erik Karlsson... any team that struggles to get help from their blue line in the offensive zone will get a huge boost from him in the NHL. I can see him playing next year in the NHL.

That kid managed to develop so well when Brandon's NHL prospects were there, especially as over-agers. Seeing him put up that kind of production with no quality help there next year just proves he's going to be special in the NHL.

Im sorry I did not notice that it was only American skaters.

I have watched tape on Jones, Nurse, Zadorov, Pulock and Ristolainen. I have Jones at the top and Nurse is a close 2nd. Zadorov, Pulock and Ristolainen are all around the same area on my board. I like Pulock the best, I just think that he is an underrated defenseman with great offensive abilities. Zadorov is a project but could be the best of these three. I like Ristolaninen, maybe its because I have not seen enough tape but most of the tape I have seen shows nothing regarding his defensive abilities. I would have no problem if we take him I am just not sold on him. I would love to see us add another 1st and get Pulock and another defenseman.

This would be my board....
1. Jones
2. Nurse
3. Pulock
4. Ristolainen
5. Zadorov

We can agree to disagree, I like all of these defenseman just some more than others.

Yea, My response was kinda harsh and exaggerated Laughing

That said the Flyers are lucky that all of the defenseman in the top half of draft seem like they are decent puck movers so we'll get someone that can help us. I'm kind of turned off by Nurse because everytime you try and look up stuff for him you can't escape a clip of him getting into a fight we have other players for that and its not a dominant quality of a true #1 D Man in the NHL.

That said now that the season is over I guess its time to start researching. If we draft another center this year I might actually fight Homer though.

The unfortunate thing is there are some very good centers in this draft as well. Like I said before an ideal situation would be to add another 1st to get an offensive player or a defenseman. I feel like we should look to move Read for a pick plus because this is the best draft in a long time and we wont be able to keep all of our young skaters.

Sigh.

Congrats to Colorado for getting their shot at Jones.
