Hey guys...casual follower of the NHL for the last couple of seasons and with the season starting up tonight, I'd love to find a team to really get into and follow in depth.

Does anyone have any recommendations for exciting teams to follow? I think my only prerequisites are I won't be pulling for Philadelphia, Boston or New York. Any suggestions you guys have are more than welcome!

Well then, you can go away.

Laughing But seriously, I see you're from PA. Is being somewhat close to there a plus? Or does it not matter what city the team is in?

Be a Coyotes fan, I might actually post about the Yotes around here if I could find another one of us

We have a terrible roster every year but for the most part do pretty ok with it because Tippet (Our coach) is a genius

Chicago, Pittsburgh, LA immediate contenders

some Canadian teams are finally coming around and looking promising for the near future (Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa)l

Detroit is pretty much always good, arguably on the downswing but might have the best group of prospects in the league.

Really need to know what you're looking for in a team.

Why are you trying to misguide this here fellow? Why wouldn't he want to root for the team with the greatest GM of all time?

ALL HAIL THE GM THAT HAS CRAFTED A CONTENDER FOR THE #1 OVERALL PICK THAT, REGARDLESS, WILL BE FORFIETED ANYWAY.

Pittsburgh Penguins are the team. They are in PA (bonus, their AHL team is on the other side of the state). They have the best player in the NHL in Sidney Crosby, plus an elite DMAN, former MVP, and potential goal scoring leader. They won a recent Stanley Cup and their core is signed well into the future. Their owner is one of the greatest NHL players of all-time and they are always active around the trade deadline.

That said, I'm a fan of the way teams like Chicago, LA, and St Louis are built.

3 Stanley Cups, 5 Eastern Conference Championships, playoffs in all but 4 of his years as GM (since 1987).

Best. In. The. Business.

Plus, I'll guarantee we come nowhere near the #1 overall pick.

If you watch it, you will know.

But in all seriousness (though being a Blackhawks fan is totally worth it!), if you're a fan of the sport and with no team or regional bias to tie you to one... I always find it cool when people like that latch onto one of the Canadian clubs - rich history, origins of the sport, and what not.

Just, for the sake of your own heart and I'm sure many around here will agree with me, steer clear of the Sharks unless you're a masochist. Laughing

So basically... you want to be a Penguins fan, but don't want to say it? Laughing

Might as well join the fanbase. You won't be hated, because apparently all Penguins fans are bandwagoners Laughing

I usually wouldn't recommend a Buffalo team but the Sabres are young and on the up and up and still have a bunch of draft picks coming up.

Oh and we aren't Philly, so that's a plus.
