I was wondering what % people think would be elite.

For example I would say the top 5-10% of a position group is a reasonable amount that could be considered elite.

So 1.6-3.2 starting centers or quarterback's would be in the elite range (sample size of 32).

What percentage do you consider elite? Or is percentage a good rough guide line?

Top 10% is typically elite

But in the NFL, you typically go in tiers - that Elite QB Tier would probably have 3 to 5 QB's in it depending ont he year (it once was just 2 - Manning and Brady)

10% I think is pretty spot on, on average i'd say each team has around 5 Elite players, 53 guys on a roster, so yeah, 10% is pretty good. Give or take a percent or 2.

I'd say 1-2%.

But it really depends on your definition of the word elite. I use the word elite very lightly.

An elite player to me is a potential HOF player or a once in a generation player. Not the guy who's good every 2-3 years.

You can look at it that way too, like a Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, so on.

I believe there are different tiers of elite. For instance, I think there are 6 elite quarterbacks but they're seperated into two tiers. If you wanna be anal about it I guess just take the first tier than.

5-6 Quarterbacks
10 Wide Receivers
6-10 Tight Ends
5-8 Tackles
12 Guards
3-5 Centers
0 Fullbacks

5 Defensive Ends
5 Defensive Tackles
5 Middle Linebackers
3-4 3-4 Outside Linebackers
2-3 4-3 Outside Linebackers
4 Safeties
3-5 Cornerbacks

Yes, Victor Cruz is a bigger asset to a QB than Antonio Brown is. Id be hard-pressed to find many people that would take the latter.

Unfortunately everyone is elite.

There are guys that may be elite at one thing(for example pass rushing) but then there are guys who do everything which makes them elite.

Elite is used too often and should be Top ~3.

In my opinion, elite means that the player can be argued for best in the league at his position. So like-

QB- Brady, Manning
HB- Peterson, Johnson
WR- Johnson, Fitz, Moss

and so on, so forth.

In reality, there should only be 2-3 players at each position we can call
"elite." Otherwise, we set the bar too low. An elite player should be arguably the best at his position and instantly improve any team he plays for.

not a specific percentage, and if you wanted to do that you could just change it each year.

i.e. there are probably six elite QBs this year, two or three elite WRs[Moss, AJ, Fitzgerald], two or three elite role-playing WRs[i.e. Welker and Wayne], three or five elite RBs[CJ2K, MJD, All Day, SJax, Turner], etc.

to me it's more of a: put this player into any team with anyone surrounding him and he will produce as expected. you can't put a specific % on it.

it's not specific.

If there are no elite players then just because say someone is the best at their position doesn't mean that they are elite.

Agreed. A player is elite if you can make a legitimate case that they are tops at their respective position.

That's not to say the other players aren't very good or even great, but I see the word "elite" as a whole different category.
