I think slot/nickel is now just one of 11 positions. Having a guy with a two way go in man coverage, and trying to hit a jam on a receiver behind the line of scrimmage is a difficult and valuable job. If the guy can make plays from there, it's worth it. Not sure if this individual dude is worth the pick, but I consider NB a starting defensive position in today's NFL. We play against Puka and Cooper Kupp twice each year. We saw what happened with Oliver last year. Lenior is a great player for the 9ers, and he plays nickel as well as anyone, so in that regard the positional value is diminished, but a guy good enough to start at nickel and push Lenior outside would be a welcome addition to the squad, but I am not sure it would be worth our 1st rounder. Branch was well worth the pick for the Lions last year. He was a headache to play against as well.

The 5th year option is overplayed imo. The only relevant position this is for is QB I think. It's really about having team control for an extra year while you negotiate. The Athletic had a mock where the Lions trade out of the first because the Raiders want Penix. I could see that happening. That being said, you are overestimating the difference between #29 and $40 in terms of cap hit. #29 has a 2.3M cap hit, #40 has 1.6M. 700k is a practice squad player.

I coach on my son’s travel baseball team and once we hit January it’s 20+ hours a week of my time. Once we hit April it’s basically every day after work and almost every weekend for 3-4 months, then at least a night or two during the fall in the “offseason”. I wouldn’t have it any other way. I love it. I haven’t had the opportunity to coach teams without my kids on them (yet) but I hope to at some point, and would be just as involved there without the same emotional investments.

Yeah, it would suck, but moving up even one spot is just too expensive. And it would cost a lot because the Giants would be giddy.
