I'd take Tate, who does not have the best name ever. That belongs to former Minor League Baseball player Wonderful Terrific Monds III. Yes, that's his real name, look it up. _________________

Tate. He is a aggressor attacking the ball and coming down with it, hes tough, doesnt hold anything back out there, plays much bigger then he is.
I cant say those things yet about Shipley. Shipley will offer a team a very nice prospect as a returner tho. _________________

How is it easily? His skill set? His production?

Shipley will be a ncie slotman and return guy for someone. He has good hands, and gets YAC. i see a bit oif Wes Welker in him.
But tate is the better prospect IMO _________________

Golden Tate is clearly the better prospect and player in my mind. Over the past 1.5 years (this season and last), Tate has more yards, more TD's, and a far better YPC average. Shipley has him in receptions, but those are due to him getting a large amount of dump offs and short dink-and-dunk routes.
Tate this year has been probably the best producing WR of any top flight school. He has 52 receptions (about 7.5 catches per game), 847 yards (121 per game) and 8 receiving TD's (1.1 per game). After Floyd went down with an injury, the defenses that he faced focused on him, and rolled coverages his way. How did he respond? By getting at least 100 offensive yards and 1 TD in every single game. The past 3 games (3 huge games on ND's schedule) he is averaging 9.3 receptions, 163 receiving yards, and 17 yards per reception. He has also scored 5 TD's in that stretch. What Tate has been doing lately has been incredible.
As prospects Tate is far and away the better one. He is a greater athlete, as he shows the ability to get good separation against even the best defenses (look at his numbers against the Trojans: 8 catches, 117 yards, 2 TD's). His hands are some of the best I have ever seen (he catches pretty much everything thrown his way, from lasers thrown about his helmet, to circus catches on deep balls). He also has fantastic skills once he has the ball in his hands. He is great after the catch, and as a converted RB he is really tough to bring down. He was actually a RB in high school, and had never played WR until he got to ND (think about it, he is that good at the game despite only being at that position for 3 years). As a freshman he had 6 catches all year because the only route he knew how to run was a Go Route. Now he has progressed to the point that he can get open on almost any thing he runs. He also brings the option of being a staple in a teams Wildcat offense. As an ex-RB, he understands how to run the ball through an offensive line and use blockers, and he has the fearlessness and power of a RB.
Shipley is a great college RB, but Tate is on another level. Shipley is like a poor man's Wes Welker, and Tate is like Steve Smith. _________________

I'm curious what the argument could possibly be for Shipley. At least Tate supporters are giving a reason.
Tate career stats - 116 catches, 2058 yards, 19 TDs
season stats - 52 catches, 847 yards, 8 TDs
Shipley career stats - 190 catches, 2419 yards, 25 TDs
season stats- 58 catches, 713 yards, 5 TDs
Shipley also has played a year more _________________

Odd comparison because they are two completely different receivers. Shipley will be used as a slot receiver in the form of Wes Welker. Great hands and very reliable. Reminds me of Brandon Stokely. He will never be a go to guy in the red zone, but he'll be a safety valve for QB's who need to move the chains.
Tate is a mystery to me. He has the game of a true #1 receiver, but he doesn't have the size for any team to take a 1st round gamble on him. The current trend in the NFL is to have big, strong receivers as their #1 targets (Larry Fitzgerald, Andre Johnson, Brandon Marshall, Vincent Jackson, Marquis Colston, etc.) Although his talent is undeniable, his size will keep him out of the 1st round whether he comes out this year or not. |

He's actually bigger than Steve Smith and DeSean Jackson. He'll go 2nd round if not 1st. _________________

I think Steve Smith is an exceptional player, and the exception, not the rule (plus I think he was drafted in the 3rd round).
Jackson was drafted in the 2nd, and is turning into quite the receiver, but he was picked mainly for his speed. Is Tate as fast as Jackson? |
