RAIDERS VS. CHARGERS

SEPTEMBER 14, 2009 MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL

Let's face it, lately we haven't been getting off to hot starts week 1. And these nationally televised games are becoming embarrassing with huge losses to the Chargers in '07 and Denver in '08. But this year is different right? At least we don't have the turmoil at the coaching position we are accustom to as Al and Tom are working together swimingly. Add to the fact Cable's staff has a collective coaching experience of decades and you start to think, maybe, just maybe they have something. So let's get to the brass tax of the matchup.

OFFENSE

It starts and stops upfront along the Oline.

Henderson, once the staffs whipping boy, has become a welcome surprise at LT. His game vastly improved and he is keep Russell clean. Can he hold of the relentless and fired up Chargers pass rush from Merriman?

Chris Morris wins the starting job, just in time to meet Jamal Williams, the big nasty NT of the Chargers 3-4. As a career backup, is he ready for the limelight? Can he make plays and allow our running game to go?

Who's going to stop Shaun Phillips who has more career sacks (9.5) against the Raiders than he does any other team?

Russell, DHB, Murphy. 2 rookies and their leading man. Can they get the passing game going on the outside? Was Russell's preseason success his growing into his starting role, or the result of preseason vanilla defenses? He needs to sense the pressure as there is likely to be a lot of it coming from San Diego.

RBs? Who starts and will the running game click despite not being used much in preseason while the Raiders focus on the pass?

Overview:

The Oline has to hold off the pressure from a very well coached Chargers defense. They need to keep them honest by being able to run the ball and set up play action. The ball can't be turned over and scoring TDs in the redzone is key.

DEFENSE

The Chargers bring talent and more talent on offense. Rivers is slowly making a case for elite status, LT is trying to prove he's not on the decline. Sproles, Gates, Jackson all have the ability to make huge plays. The Oline keeps Rivers clean.

Pressure will be key. Will Marshall blitz his LBs, CBs to help create pressure? If Rivers has all day to throw, he will eat the defense alive.

That however is the least of our concern. How do we stop the run regardless of if Seymour plays? The defense needs to be on another level in regards to energy. They have to want it more and go take it.

How will Morrison play with his elbow? Asomugha with the wrist? How will young talent such as Branch take to the limelight?

Overview:

Stop the run! Stop the run! Make Rivers throw against our semi-talented secondary and create turnovers. Tackle and don't give up big plays!

Overall Analysis:

The team has to come to play, or it's over early. The offense should be much improved and able to spell the defense, something we saw more towards the end of last season. The offense needs to keep the defense off the field.

The Raiders have a chance to shock a team that has beaten them 11 straight. The Chargers are a lock to win this division right? Well, it's time to send a message. The Chargers are a Superbowl team right? Well, it's time to put our fit in 'em.

A win against the Chargers is long long overdue. They are ripe for the picking if the energy is there and the fight is there. Cable can call a good game plan, but it's up to the players to execute.

Do we win or lose, post your predictions!

Great post BP!

Despite our woeful preseason on defense, I have faith in our young D that they will rise to the occasion and shut down the running game!
Yea I know Shocked

It's going to be a lot closer than what the majority of the nation believes.

27-24 Raiders Cool

nice write up BP

Offensive: we need to establish the run early, we need to show them all three RB's and what they bring to the table (except in the goaline where I hope Fargas is just cheering). THey need to move Williams and run up that middle. They need to use DMac and his speed to get to the edge and should throw in a reverse to DHB to get him the ball early (im sure he will have tons of jitters) and see what he can due in space. The passing game needs to feed off the running game. There should be a heavy rotation at the WR spot, giving different looks and increasing our versatility. The offense needs long drives that result in points to keep our D off the field and fresh.

Def: Please stop the run, pretty please. If we can stop the run we force them to pass, were we will need the pass rush to be good to keep Rivers uncomfortable and covered in that inflied dirt. If we can't stop the run, we have no chance at this game. If we can't get to Rivers he will pick us apart, we have a great secoundary but they can't cover everyone for long times. get to rivers and shut down the run and we have a chance.

ST: field position field position field postion, we need to pin them deep in their zone and we need good returns to start our drives, we have great return men and good specialists, we need this to win this game and every game, and they should deliever

We all know there talent, there recent streak agaisnt us and all the other crap.

ITS TIME TO MAKE A STATEMENT TO THE NFL, OURSELVES AND THE WORLD THAT IT ENDS NOW!!!!!!

Edit: I forgot my predicition, 24-21 Raiders

running the ball and stopping the run is the key for us. we CANNOT get down big early. if it is 17-0, 21-3 by the middle of the 2nd it's a blowout. we don't have the capability to come back from a big deficit. our will is easily broken because we are not very good and we don't have confidence in ourselves when real bullets start flying. russell NEEDS to make plays off of playaction. hitting miller down the seam, murphy and dhb for some quick strikes will give the team confidence early. dhb needs to do something early in the game in order to be effective. an end around, a deep post, something to get sd to respect him quickly. if we go 3 and out multiple times in the 1st quarter and sd starts scoring early, it's going to get ugly. our d needs some 3 and outs early in the game. we NEED pressure from our front 4 and hit rivers hard and early. if we can get off to a good start, we might have a good chance. if things go bad early, the game will be over early.

If Tom Cable loses out this year. I am going to nominate you for our Head Coach. Seriously well thought out BP.

My prediction is a loss Crying or Very sad 24-17 Lets face it the Chargers might just be a top 5 team this year and we are scratching our way out of the basement. In all realism the game should be won by the Whales Vagina Dischargers. I think LT will be phenomenal 100+ yards 2 td's like usual. Gates should be contained as well as Jackson but Rivers will probably somehow come up with 200+ passing yards. Their defense is going to pressure Russell and I don't think the O-line is ready for the blitz.

The way to win the game and the rest of the Season is to give the flippin rock to DMC and Bush our very own Hell's Bells. If we can get them very active in the running game and passing game, everything can open up from there. I want an early heavy dose of Bush and DMC. For the love of whatever you believe in let these guys loose so we don't lose, Tom Cable. Get Bush and DMC 100+ AP a piece and we can win this game.

The Chargers weakness is their defensive backfield, they can be beaten deep. To catch them out of position we need to establish our running game early. Morris vs Williams is a very important matchup in this one and it doesn't look good for us. If we find a way to move the chains on the ground we will keep it close. Our best shot at it is running off tackle which means a lot of DMAC... or coming out passing to set up the run, which would certainly catch them off guard but i'm not sure the coaching staff has enough confidence in Russell to do that. Basically, it's playing not to lose or playing to win.

I don't see us stopping their offense. LT and Sproles will get 100+ yds combined for sure. Rivers will have plenty of time to find his receivers. The only way to slow them down is to keep them on the sidelines. It's all on our offense.

Chargers 27 - Raiders 17. Sorry guys. Confused

Will the fans make it hard for Rivers to hear?
Will Louis Murphy have his big game face on?
Will the OL run block and protect like banshees?

If so, we have a shot.

Good post.

Unfortunately, I don't see us winning this game. I think the Chagers will have their way with us on offense. We might as well call Ladanian "Al Davis" because he owns the Raiders. Richard Seymour would've helped us contain him, but he's still not here and I doubt he plays. Phillip Rivers is a top 5 QB in the NFL, and as good as our corners are, I expect him to be able to pass the ball quite comfrontably. Still don't have anybody to stop Antonio Gates.

On offense, I don't have faith right now in DHB and Murphy as our two starting WRs. They both have a lot of potential, but it's pretty tough to ask two rookies to start their first NFL games on MNF, in front of the whole world. Although the Chargers ranked 31st in pass defense last year, I expect their pass defense to be a lot better this year. Mostly due to Merriman being back. Speaking of Merriman, our offensive line NEEDS to give Russell time if we even expect to have a chance in this game. Last year, even without Merriman, the Chargers put consistent pressure on Russell. The running game needs to carry this offense. DMC, Fargas and Bush all need to touch the ball a lot in this game.

Overall, I just think the Chargers are too much for us to handle right now.

34-20 Chargers for the 13th straight time. Hope I'm wrong about this one.

Mario Henderson just went down my list. What a horrible rapper Lil-wayne is. Luckily I like Henderson for his play and not his musical preferences.
