I know we've had quite a few of these around here on FF/TAST but o well
Well, since 10:00AM EST this mourning, I am officially property of the United States Army. Got a waiver for my hearing and after a few weeks of searching training opened up for 91A. M1 Abrams Tank maintainer. Leave for basic October 7th 2009. Signed on for a little over 6 years...3 years and 27 weeks active(includes all training) and 3 years reserves. I am recieving an $8,000 bonus in a lump sum at the end of AIT(but it will be taxed so around $6,500 most likely). Basic is in Ft. Jackson, SC and AIT is in Ft. Knox, KY. All I have to say is FINALLY.
Now for the hard part...telling the rest of my family AND making it out alive ...im gonna tell my grandma and aunt when they get back from California for my graduation. They wont like it, but they'll support me.
Private Neumatic, has a nice ring to it
Thank you to any former, current or future military men and women for serving this place we call the USA. _________________

Best of luck dude, your work is and will be appreciated. A good friend of mine is going into the air force in the fall, so I know this transition will not be easy. _________________

GO NAVY! BEAT ARMY!
Now that that is out of the way, good luck man. I think you made a choice that will develop your character further and teach you a lot about living on your own as well as how to function as a member of one of the best teams on Earth. Be strong, and be safe. _________________

Seriously though, thank you for the sacrifice you're giving to this country. It's gonna be a rough next couple months, so good luck. |

| Well I was going to start a tread but it looks like I can just ask my question in here. I'm thinking of joining the navy reserves and I was wondering if anyone is part of the reserves or knows what I would be getting into. |

I take the ASVAB on the 27th of this month at a National Guard Armory and then will end up enlisting in the Air Force around June 5th after I get my scores back.

That was SOOOOOOO HARD for me. When I told my parents I was shaking a little. Telling everyone else was easy, but my grandma looked like this...
Everyone supported my decision, they were all pretty shocked though, but for the most part very happy that I finally something I want to do and am excited to do.
And, CONGRATULATIONS! _________________

Nice job man!
I was Army Infantry and all I have to say is you're in for a challenge. But I bet you're like me and you love challenges in your life. Just remember man.. basic is all a mind game trying to break you. They need to make sure you can function under immense pressure. Also remember.. if your battle buddy is fubar then you are too. His mistakes are your mistakes and vice versa. Watch his back and keep him sqaured away and trust he will do the same and you'll be fine.
I wasn't Cavalry but a buddy of mine was and the Abrams is a well made piece of dealing death machinery. By "maintainer" do you mean mechanic? If so you'll spend most of your time in the motor pool when in Garrison. And in combat the mechanic's are way in the rear so that should set the minds of your family members at ease a little.
Anyway from one military man to another.. thank you for your willingness to be on the front lines to protect the rest of us. May God bless and best of luck be with you! _________________

I still am. My current unit is 1st Squadron, 16th Cavalry Regiment, which is located at Fort Knox.
As for what life is going to be like, it's going to involve a lot of physical labor. He'll find all about the fun of replacing broken torsion bars and such. He'll have a 4,000 page TM that is going to be his bible.

Good luck telling your family! That's probably the toughest part. My parents cried when I told em I wanted to enlist after high school. They are finally going to let me enlist after graduation. _________________
