Steelers linebacker James Harrison cashed in on his incredible 2008 season by agreeing to a new contract Monday that is worth $51.175 million over the next six seasons.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4064291

Its a 6-year, $51 million deal, making him the second highest-paid player in franchise history, after QB Ben Roethlisberger.

Harrison won the defensive player of the year award in 2008.

Harrison became a starter in 2007 after Joey Porter left the Steelers in free-agency and signed with the Dolphins, over the past two seasons Harrison had 24.5 sacks and forced 14 fumbles.

In Superbowl 43 Harrison made a game changing play in the end of the first half when he picked a pass in the red-zone and returned it a Superbowl record 100-yard to a TD, the score ultimately meant the difference in the game.

Take 2...

Great signing. I expect another great year from the reigning defensive MVP.

Too much and too long, imo.

They could get another player to step up and fill his void in that system in 2-3 years once he's served his purpose in Pittsburgh.

That's probably what will happen to be honest. I am not too happy about the length and value of the contract, but I doubt he sees the final two years. Just like when Joey Porter signed a six-year extension and was cut after 5 years.

I question the contract they gave to this playboy because he has some major character concerns in a system that is very friendly. Not to mention he is old

Only issue was the gf incident, and word has it that she attacked him with a blunt object.

Dont know if thats true and i wouldnt attack a women, but uhh... if someone comes at me with a knife, im going to do whatever it takes to defend myself Confused

regardless, i think its 3 years too long Confused No idea why they extend him so long.

The thing you have to think about is the guaranteed $$$.....its only $20 mill......

Overall, the deal is fine.......probably a little front loaded as well.

Exactly, chances are the most money is in the first 3 years, so if they cut him at age 34, they don't take much of a hit at all. As much as i think LeBeau's system makes him a success... Dude is still a beast.

I guess the Steelers are also counting on no salary cap.

I remember everybody talking about how cheap the Steelers were at one time. After the money theyve dished out over the last few seasons, noone can say that anymore.

LOL That has to suck.

May be a bit long but its good to lock him up. He is a key cog in that defense. I think both sides got what they wanted
