Free-agent quarterback Byron Leftwich has agreed to a two-year deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a source told ESPN's Michael Smith.

This probably means that that the Buccaneers will part ways with QB Brian Griese.

Leftwich, a former starter at Jacksonville who was cut by the team a couple of years ago, has had a pretty good stint with the Steelers in 2008.

He played in 5 games and scored 3 TD's while passing for 303 yards and had a QB rating of 104.3.

Leftwich was hoping to compete for a starting job somewhere else, and he probably will on the Buccaneers.

***Update***
Its a 2-year, $7.5 million contract.

Couldn't this have gone in the thread that listed the teams Byron was visiting?

Now that's not a very constructive comment, is it? I think his deserves its own thread, as, after all, SIGNING and VISITING are two very different things in this wonderful, wonderful creation we know as the National Football League.

As a Steelers fan, all I have to say on this development is "crap". It was nice knowing B-Train was there backing Big Ben up. Oh well, I hope he gets his starting job, I always liked the guy.

that is all

Right, but it's the continuance of a news story that was already reported.

I just feel an appendage/thread title change would have been more appropriate for this.

Charlie Batch is a quality back up, but I felt that Leftwich was more dangerous. I like the guy, but I have to say I'm glad he's not in the AFC North any longer.

Not bad. Now if I were the Bucs here's what I'd do. We know they have weapons, Derrick Ward, Antonio Bryant, Michael Clayton, Dexter Jackson and Kellen Winslow. I'd have a QB battle between Byron Leftwich and Luke McCown in training camp and pre-season this year. Whoever wins gets the job. I do not think they need to draft one. I think that if McCown or Leftwich play bad then next year they could go for one. I'd go defense this year.

I saw Byron at an Ed Hardy store in Clearwater Beach a few days ago. I have no clue why I didn't even think about him being down near Tampa to sign.

Not bad for the Bucs. I think if given the chance Leftwich can still be a successful QB.

This is good news. Hopefully this means there is one less team the Vikings will have to compete with to get Brady Quinn from the Browns. Very Happy

Agreed. This does deserve its own thread, and I'm not sure why anybody would even question that.
