PostPosted: Sun Oct 30, 2005 6:27 pm    Post subject: Blending Images Tutorial Reply with quote

In this tutorial we'll cover how to blend images.
Its a handy technique that works well as a backround for a sig.

First off, as always, open you document.
Open the pictures you wish to blend... (Ill use 3 pictures of the beautiful new '05 mustang)

Make sure all the images fit you document and you wont have anything cut off. (if they dont fit: Image>Image Size to resize the image)

Select the marquee tool (press M) and place a box around the entire image. press CTL+C.

Go to your new document - press CTL+V

Do this for each of your pictures.

You should be here:
Document:

Layers palette:

-------

Make sure you have the top layer selected on the layers palette.
At the top, go to Layer>Add Layer Mask>Hide All

One of your layers will now be hidden.

Select the gradiant tool

If you see a paintbucket instead, right click on it, and select gradiant.

At the options bar, click on the gradiant (where it says "click here")
A box will drop down - make sure the one in the top left is selected

**This is the tricky part!**

Drag a line (still using the gradiant tool) across where one picture ends and the other begins.

You wanna start at about the end of your VISIBLE image is and go about to the end of where the non-visible image will be.

*It may take a few (of several) times to get it smoothe. Where you start, stop, and the distance of the gradiant, all play a role in how it comes out. Practice makes perfect.*

If done correctly, this is what youll get after you finish that last step:

-------

If you want you can merge the 2 layers into one.
Press CTL+E

The cars may not have been the best example, but you see how it works...

Now go!
Blend away!

NOTE: This was a tutorial on a site that I used to help moderate. The site has since shut down but the pictures are still up.

Ok we are going to make some very simple grundge text.

Ok first off create a new doocument whatever size you want, depending on what your using your text for. I'm using something like 320x100. Go ahead and write the text you want (doesn't matter what color because we will change it later. Also this tutorial works best with thick fonts, I'm using the font called "Army" and you can get it at http://www.dafont.com).

Ok now select your text layer and go to "Layer" then "Add Vector Mask" then "Hide All." Your text should disappear....don't worry its still there, its just "invisible" for now. Now you need to select your brush tool, and find a couple good grunge brushes. If you don't have any check out these sites:
http://www.studio911design.com/brushes/psbrush/psbrushes.php
http://www.photoshoproadmap.com/Photoshop-downloads/Brushes
Ok, now you need to brush the text lightly like you would a grunge sig. Your text should start "appearing" Good, keep doing that until you have something like this:

Ok
Now apply these styles to your text, by clicking the little "F" looking thing at the bottom left corner of your layers patlett.

Stroke:

Color Overlay (feel free to use whatever color you want)

Bevel & Emboss

Inner Shadow:

And finally Drop Shadow

You should have a nice looking text like mine:

PostPosted: Sun Oct 30, 2005 6:28 pm    Post subject: Full Grundge Sig Tutorial Reply with quote

Skills and materials expected in this tutorial:

Skills: You are expected to know your way around photoshop pretty good, and know your way around the layers patlett.

Materials: you need Photoshop 7 or above, and some creativity Smile icon_biggrin.gif.

1st: Create a new document in what ever size you feel fits. I'm using 320(width) by 100(height). Hit the "D" key on your keyboard to reset your colors to default (black and white). Now go to "Filter" then "Render" than "Clouds." You should have something like this:

Of course its not going to look EXACTLY like this, but it should be similar.

Ok, after that you need to get some grunge brushes. Go to any of the URLS below, and download a few.
http://www.studio911design.com/brushes/psbrush/psbrushes.php
http://www.photoshoproadmap.com/Photoshop-downloads/Brushes

Well, those will do for now, I will add some more later. Try downloading mostly ones with grunge in the name. Those just seem to work better in grunge sigs.

Once you have those brushes installed click the (the "Brush tool). Then go up to the options bar, and find this , and click the little down arrow. Then click the blue button, pointing to the right, in the top-right corner. Then go to "Load Brushes", and find where you saved your brush. Now go back to the down arrow in the options bar, and scroll down and select a brush that you downloaded. On a new layer and with black as your foreground color click in random locations (Don't hold and drag the brush), then switch to different brushes, and keep doing this until your satisfied with the result. Then change the layer's opacity to about 60. Then create a new layer and so a little more brushing, and then change the opacity to about 40. Keep doing this until your happy. Here is my result:

Ok, I don't like how dark mine turned out so I'm going to select my first layer with the clouds, and go to "Image" then "Adjustments" Then "Brightness/Contrast". I used about +30 for the brightness. Here is what changed:

Ok, we are almost done so take a deap breathe and continue. Now you need to find a good render (Anything that is rendered by the computer usually a character from a game or movie.) You can look at http://www.gamerenders.com, or http://www.gamewallpapers.com They have some nice ones. Here is what I'm using:

http://www.ck-clan.com/tutorials/grunge1/5.jpg

Make sure you resize and crop your image to a smaller size. Then put it into your image, and move it around to your liking. Here is mine:

Now select the lasso tool () and go around the areas you want to be the main focus of the image. Here is my selection:

Now go to "Select" then "Feather" and use about 15. Now hit Ctrl+C on your keyboard, then hit Ctrl+V. If it worked correctly it should have created a new layer. Now delete the layer below the newly created one. It should now look something like this:

Now with the same layer selected change the layer style to "Luminosity" and change the opacity to about 80. Optionally you can move it below one of your grunge brush layers, to make it blend a little better.

Ok, now to add color!!!!

Go to "Layer" then "New adjustment layer" then "Color Balance". Somthing should pop-up, just hit ok. Now somthing else should be up. Select the shadows button, and begin changing the colors around. Then change the midtones and the highlights. You should come out with a really cool coloring effect.

(For shadows I had -35, +15, +20. For midtones 0, -3, +18. For Highlights +5, -4, -69)

Ok now to add a 1 pixel border to the image. Create a new layer on top of everything. Hold ctrl and click your cloud layer and it should have selected the entire document. Go to "Select" then "Modify" then "Border" and use 1 px. Select your paintbucket tool () and with black as your forground click outside of the selected box until it fills in. You should have something like this:

Now just add text and your done!!! Post your results, and any questions you may have here.

Here is the finished result of mine:

I think that the tutorials should be different topics, because if you're looking for one certain thing then it will be quite difficult to find.

This is more or less a graphics forum and if the only topics are Requests and Galleries there will not be lots of new topics apart from the few 'help' topics.

Enchance render quality

Take the layer your render is on
Duplicate the layer
Set the blending mode to hard light on the duplicated layer
Adust the opacity of the top layer if its too burned
