Quote:

Broncos released DLs Dewayne Robertson and John Engelberger, LBs Jamie Winborn and Niko Koutouvides, TE Nate Jackson, and SS Marquand Manuel.
Robertson's cap figure was $16M, a ridiculous amount for a league-average wave tackle with bum knees. The No. 4 overall pick in 2003, Robertson is 27 but may not have more than another season or two in him. The Broncos kept him on the roster last year despite failing every physical they put him through. Josh McDaniels is cleaning house with the other Shanahan-era holdovers.

Quite easy decisions here for the Broncos. I'm sure someone will give Robertson another chance. In fact, I'm sure all these guys will get signed to cheaper contracts elsewhere

PS - Did I beat BillySpikes to this??? Shocked Shocked Shocked

Please let the Hawks take Koutouvides back! We need him on special teams. Badly.

Not really surprising to see any of these guys shown the door. Although I thought we would hold onto Winborn since he's at least serviceable backup at both OLB spots. Nate Jackson wasn't too shabby as a 3rd TE either.

Robertson played ok but he doesn't fit anywhere in the 3-4 so that's why he's out, Niko disappointed and ended up behind Nate Webster and rookie Spencer Larsen on the MLB depth chart. Engerlberger was aging and doesn't fit well in the 3-4 and Marquand Manuel was, well, Marquand Manuel.

But a couple of serviceable players are now on the market.

I know the Jets traded Robertson for a conditional pick...does anyone know if Robertson played in enough snaps this past season, to warrant a draft pick to the Jets? Or nah?

I doubt he did, but I just want to make sure with a Broncos fan. I think he can be a decent DT in a 4-3, but most of his career he's been stuck in the 3-4, and struggling....he was improving in the 4-3 for us before we changed to the 3-4

Hmm robertson might be a good pickup for the falcons 4-3 NT spot. Put him beside Abe again i think he would do well.

He only played 50 percent. To get a pick, he needed to play 65 percent.

This pretty much confirms, then, that the 3-4 switch is imminent. I am also glad to see Engleberger and Manuel go. The CFL awaits them, if they would take them. Winborn is okay, but he probably doesn't fit the new scheme.

Good moves. Robertson was a stupid signing to begin with but they obviously realize they need to cut their losses and move on. Its a good start to getting rid of the jokes on their D and starting to rebuild it. Their O really doesnt need a whole lot of help so they can get some guys in free agency and through the draft to build it back up.

Much too short, to where he'd be a liability against the run.

Good overall decisions with these 6 players, as the moves clear $6.425 million in 2009 salary commitments. That could stretch into signing bounses for FA's or keep the bounses for our inhouse re-signings
