Quote:
The Giants have placed the non-exclusive franchise tag on running back Brandon Jacobs, the team has announced. That means the free-agent-to-be will not be a free agent, though the "non-exclusive" classification means he's free to negotiate with other teams. Of course, if he signs with another team and the Giants don't match, Jacobs' new team would owe the Giants two first-round draft picks.

Great move by the Giants.

Very good move. I think this is his last year of being effective. Run him into the ground then let him go.

As long as he doesn't carry the entire load, he can be effective for another three or four years. He's not an old man. He's 26 years old, and has only 555 carries. I don't understand where you get this idea that he's at the end of his career.

I found this part very interesting:

Quote:
It also means Jacobs could potentially be bumped down to a restricted free agent next year if the NFL Players' Association and the league cannot reach an agreement on a new collective bargaining agreement. That would make 2010 an uncapped year and nudge the requirement for unrestricted free agency from four accrued seasons to six. Jacobs is entering his fifth season

That would mean the Giants would get to keep him for another year, at a pretty low price.

In the end, I think the Giants will make Jacobs happy and give him a fair deal. They're just making sure he doesn't hit free agency.

Sorry for my ignorance but. Would this mean that Derrick Ward is going to get signed to a long term deal?

Not at all. Both Ward and Jacobs knew that one of them won't be back next year. This tag means that the Giants chose Jacobs. Ward is going to test free agency, and most likely leave. I'm guessing to the Cardinals or 49ers.

Ward may be signed to a long term deal, but it will not be by the Giants

Good move by Giants. With Ward almost certainly gone in Fa, I think him and Bradshaw are going to be an insane combo!

This was a very important move for the Giants to make. With all the questions regarding Burress they needed to keep Jacobs.

Factor in his running style with the fact that he can't stay healthy an entire year, I'd say he starts his decline by the time he's 28 (2010 season).

The RBs who are still starting at age 28+ either aren't very good anymore or have an elusive style.

-Jamal Lewis
-LT
-Westbrook
-LJ
-Edge

Confused

Ward is expendible. Jacobs is the better back. RBs are one of the easier positions to fill.

Yeah, Jacobs has a bad running style. But, factor in his size, age, and number of carries, and he still has three or four years left.

As I already mentioned, Jacobs has only 555 NFL carries.

Take a look at some of these other guys:

Jamal Lewis - 2,399 carries
Ladanian Tomlinson - 2,657 carries
Edgerin James - 2,982 carries

Jacobs would have to average 614 carries per year (which is impossible) over the next three years to reach the closest guy on that list. The most carries Jacobs has ever had in one year is 219. So the Giants use Jacobs wisely. He isn't an every down back. But, when he is in the game, he makes a big impact on the defense.

If Jacobs isn't asked to carry the entire load, and he won't be, he still has some good years ahead of him.
